Sen. John Kerry's campaign said yesterday that the Democratic presidential nominee is not hiding any of his war records and has, in fact, released them all to the public.
"Senator Kerry's entire military service record is posted on JohnKerry.com. His entire record," said Michael Meehan, adviser for communications to the campaign, at a press conference called to defend Mr. Kerry against recent charges that the former Navy lieutenant didn't deserve some of his war decorations — three Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star and a Silver Star.
Members of the group Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, veterans who served duty similar to Mr. Kerry on PCF (Patrol Craft Fast) boats, have written a book and sponsored a television advertisement challenging Mr. Kerry's version of events during his four months in combat.
The group wants Mr. Kerry to sign Standard Form 180, which it says would facilitate the release of records and help sort out which version of events is accurate.
John O'Neill, the man who took over Mr. Kerry's command in Vietnam and a co-author of the new book "Unfit for Command," said such records as after-action, hostile fire and casualty reports would show whether Mr. Kerry deserved one of his Purple Hearts.
Mr. Meehan, acknowledging that Mr. Kerry has not signed Standard Form 180, said the records have all been laid out nonetheless.
"Has he signed the form?" he asked. "No. What he's signed is his release of privacy to the United States Navy to turn over his entire military record and he's posted it up on his Web site, so the whole world can see his entire military record."

THE NAVY DID NOT HAVE HIS ENTIRE SERVICE RECORD. SUCH RECORDS AS ARE PERTINENT (COMPLETE MEDICAL RECORD, MILITARY PERSONNEL FILE, ETC.) ARE IN THE CUSTODY OF THE THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES, NATIONAL PERSONNEL RECORDS CENTER, MILITARY PERSONNEL RECORDS SECTION, IN ST. LOUIS. THE STANDARD FORM 180 SPECIFICALLY AUTHORIZES RELEASE OF THESE RECORDS. THE MEEHAN STATEMENT IS THE TYPICAL, PREDICTABLE, CAMPAIGN FRAUD. CALL THEM ON THIS!!!

Do they mean that the war records attributing Lt. Peck's actions in January to Lt. Kerry are back up on the site? That the "musical chairs" of other examples of "all his war records" that mysteriously disappeared have reappeared?
Or am I missing something?

Much, but not all, of the suspicion about candidate Kerry's military exploits stems from his three purple hearts. The Swift Boat Vets keep calling for the release of his military records. But it is easier than that. He merely has to roll up his sleeves. That would resolve the issue for good one way or the other.
The contoversy is about the first and the third purple hearts. The first one has been described as a "rose thorn" scratch that was treated with a band aid. The third purple heart was awarded for a wound to the arm (and possibly for rice embedded in his butt). The arm wound has been reported as only a bruise in some accounts and it also has been reported as having been a bleeding wound in others. The thirty year old testimony is confused and the relevant documents have not been released for public scrutiny. However his scars should remain.
John Kerry merely has to roll up his sleeves and show the scars on his arms the way Quint and Hooper did in the movie Jaws. I have scars from childhood (more than thirty years ago for me) - so do you. Kerry can destroy the credibility of the Swift Boat Vets by just pointing to the scars on his arms. Why hasn't he done this?
Showing your scars is an ancient practice. Cicero defended legion veterans in court two thousand years ago by displaying their scars honorably won in battle. In the days before computers, printing, and elaborate filing systems, you wore the record of your valor on your body. John Kerry has repeatedly told us how valiant he was in battle. He wants to be admired and praised for valor. Show us the scars!
