|
|
I woke up this morning to a Washington Post radio ad promoting a story slamming Larry Thurlow. I didn't even need my coffee before cranking out the following to the Post's Ombudsman, Michael Getler.
Quote: | Mr. Getler,
I heard the Washington Post ads on the radio this morning about the
Michael Dobbs story on Larry Thurlow (which I then read).
I certainly agree this story needed to be done. But here is what I
don't get: why has the Post not done the same level of investigation
on the charges that are laid out in Unfit For Command (#1 on Amazon,
#3 on NYT)? The Post has simply taken the Kerry Campaign spin hook,
line and sinker.
I've got to ask: Has Mr. Dobbs read Unfit For Command?
Here is why this is important and why I am coming to you as the Post
Ombudsman: If the charges made in Unfit For Command are true, John
Kerry has made the greatest misrepresentation of his resume of any
presidential candidate in history. Wouldn't that be a story you have
an obligation to report? Doesn't the internal meltdown the Kerry
campaign is in over this story tell you there is some smoke there?
The Post has a special history due to its role in Watergate of holding
elected officials accountable. I am confused by the Posts acceptance
of the Kerry Campaign spin to simply accept all US Navy documents as
the whole truth. Why are Post reporters not demanding that John Kerry
sign Form 180? Those same demands were made and granted of President
Bush. Which is why I raise the issue of double standards.
Why has the Post not compared statements made in Unfit For Command,
Tour of Duty, official US Navy Document and John Kerry's statements?
All of those combined comprise the written record and they are not at
all consistent. Don't you owe your readers an examination of the
conflicts of the written record? Please note, the conflicts are very
strong if you remove Unfit For Command from this written record.
Finally, I simply cannot grasp why the Post has completely failed to
aggressively examine the entire Cambodia issue. The overwhelming
evidence at this point is that this is a lie of the whole cloth --
John Kerry was never in Cambodia. Kerry's own "Band of Brothers"
claim to have never been there. The "Top Secret" mission spin now
being put out by Douglas Brinkley and others is of a bar room war
story level quality.
Mr. Getler, I am not asking the Post to review Unfit For Command and
report it is the Holy Grail of truth. I am asking that they
investigate it. Then compare the entire written record. If Unfit For
Command is the real bar room war story, then I want to know. Isn't
that a gigantic story? At the same time, if the truth is closer to
the way it is presented in Unfit For Command, we need to know that,
too.

No, I'm not holding my breath. But it felt great to get it off my chest. _________________ Whose side is John Kerry really on? Take this quiz and decide for yourself.
