Kerry's old friend, one-time spokesman, and VVAW co-
founder Bobby Muller sees that same sense of confidence in his
friend and thinks Kerry is more ready to run for the White House
now than he was in 1999, when he was "dithering" with the
decision. "I ran into him a couple of weeks ago and told him I
thought he was in his best stride ever," recalled Muller. "He
said, `Bobby, I really know what I want. I feel very confident.'"
From Muller's perspective, Vietnam was "the defining
experience" in Kerry's life. "If you were still angry about
Vietnam, you would be consumed in all sorts of negative ways and
gotten stuck," Muller said. "The guys who transcend that, like
Kerry and McCain, you draw on it. It's a framework that you
operate off of." |
