Edwards trotted out the "Sen. Kerry worked with Sen. McCain on the POW/MIA issue" bit again. Oh for a video clip of Kerry telling Mrs. Hrdlicka (POW/MIA wife) essentially to "shut up" when she was testifying before his committee. (See the Hrdlicka open letter in R&R)

John Edwards makes the case again that all citizens should have the SAME health care benefits as members of Congress... although I am NOT a supporter of universal health care... this issue can affect veterans... I am a believer that the VA health system should be considered for privitization OR as a minimum veterans have a CHOICE in receiving their health care... a veteran like a member of congress should be able to CHOOSE the BEST care available whether that is VA or ELSEWHERE...

Obviously one opposition move is the COST.... sure if we can provide veterans LOW cost health care that's OK, WHAT about the issue of BEST health care... veterans should not be second class citizens but treated fairly like members of Congress and their families...

Any supporters???? suggestions????

I thought Edwards' comment about Cheney's family and his daughter was the lowest most sleazy, disgusting comment I have heard in a debate. To use an opposing candidate's family situation to further one's political agenda is dirty, sleazy, shameful politics at its worst, and the Kerry crowd are wrong - this will not play well and reinforces the image of the low life ambulance chasing lawyer that Edwards is. Cheney was very gracious and totally diffused the situation and came out shining, whereas Edwards came across looking very small, petty and mean.

Cheney never claimed that Saddam had anything to do with 9/ll. However, we can judge how Saddam felt about it.

From the debate:
(Cheney agrees kerry is unfit, too. H eis careful to not challenge his patriotism, but makes his point anyway...Note Edwards first line in his response. That's right, Senator Edwards, and your mate Kerry is a prime example).

CHENEY: I'm saying specifically that I don't believe he has the qualities we need in a commander in chief because I don't think, based on his record, that he would pursue the kind of aggressive policies that need to be pursued if we're going to defeat these terrorists. We need to battle them overseas so we don't have to battle them here at home.
I'm not challenging John Kerry's patriotism. I said in my acceptance speech in New York City at the Republican convention that we respected his service in Vietnam, and I got applause for that.

We've never criticized his patriotism. What we've questioned is his judgment.

And his judgment's flawed, and the record's there for anybody who wants to look at it.
In 1984, when he ran for the Senate he opposed, or called for the elimination of a great many major weapons systems that were crucial to winning the Cold War and are important today to our overall forces.

When Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait and occupied it in 1990 and '91, he stood up on the floor of the Senate and voted against going in to liberate Kuwait and push Saddam Hussein back to Iraq.

The problem we have is that, if you look at his record, he doesn't display the qualities of somebody who has conviction.
And with respect to this particular operation, we've seen a situation in which, first, they voted to commit the troops, to send them to war, John Edwards and John Kerry, then they came back and when the question was whether or not you provide them with the resources they needed — body armor, spare parts, ammunition — they voted against it.

I couldn't figure out why that happened initially. And then I looked and figured out that what was happening was Howard Dean was making major progress in the Democratic primaries, running away with the primaries based on an anti-war record. So they, in effect, decided they would cast an anti-war vote and they voted against the troops.

Now if they couldn't stand up to the pressures that Howard Dean represented, how can we expect them to stand up to Al Qaida?

IFILL: Senator Edwards, you have 90 seconds to respond.

EDWARDS: Thank you.

"One thing that's very clear is that a long resume does not equal good judgment......."

I think it would be very effective had Cheney responded to the claim Edwards made about how we see every day on TV that the situation in Iraq isn't as good as the Bush admin claim. Now I'm not gonna say everything over there is just peachy....BUT....

Someone should come out and say what we ALL know is true......the media only reports on bad news. Bombings, killings, ect make headlines and TV stories....here and from Iraq. Someone should come out and say that if you base your perspective on Iraq soley from TV and headline news, that your perspective is skewed negative. We don't see anything possitive on TV about Iraq because that doesn't make good ratings.

If someone were say that plainly in response to some these whacky "mess" charges, that whole arguement would wither.

Why can't they say what most of us see as obvious?

Good point! Does what we see on the news here in the U.S., especially the 1st 5-10 minutes of TV news, and especially if it is a local news broadcast from a largish city, really reflect how things are in our own place? Of course not! Bush / Cheney need to fight back more effectively on that one, and point out the parallel.

Forget the silly online polls that desperate Dems are stuffing, here's what even some bias commentators are saying. From Kerry Spot at NRO.

NBC's Tom Brokaw: "Dick Cheney Reminded Me Of George Foreman, Kind Of A Slow Gait, But A Powerful Right-Hand When He Unleashed It In A Number Of Areas As He Went After The Kerry-Edwards Ticket." (NBC's "Special Coverage," 10/5/04)

MSNBC's Ron Reagan: "This Time, I Think The Chattering Classes, And I Include All Of Us Among Them, Will Come Out On The Side Of There Was A Stature Gap There, And It Was To Cheney's Advantage." (MSNBC's "Hardball," 10/5/04)

MSNBC's Chris Matthews Calls The Debate Between Vice President Cheney The "Howitzer" And Senator John Edwards The "Water Pistol." (MSNBC's "Hardball," 10/05/04)

MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell: "I Think Dick Cheney Did Awfully Well, At, First Of All, Putting John Edwards In His Place. Saying That I Have Been Presiding Over The Senate, And I Didn't Meet You Until Tonight. Talking About His Not Having Been On The Job Was Pretty Devastating." (MSNBC's "Hardball," 10/5/04)

MSNBC's Joe Scarborough: "I Tell You, Tonight, No Doubt About It, Edwards Got Obliterated By Dick Cheney. This Is The Most Surprising Part. This Debate Actually Turned In Cheney's Direction When They Started Talking About Domestic Issues. I Thought Cheney Handled The Foreign Policy Issues Very Well." (MSNBC's "Hardball," 10/5/04)

Just saw the replay on CSPAN.

I actually felt bad for Edwards (well almost). The Vice President completely obliterated him. This was no contest. These comments certainly show much of the talking heads, at least, watched the same debate as I did.

Another website to go to for both the Pres and VP debate transcripts is the Commission on Presidential Debates

www.debates.org/pages/debtrans.html

If you're a history buff they also have most of the debate transcripts from 1960 and 1976 through 2004. Real treasure trove.

By the way, I printed out the first two debates, 36 and 32 pages. Had to put new ink cartridges in my printer.

The democrats are now bragging about the part about Cheney's daughter. I personally thought that was cheap, and lacked maturity for Edwards to bring up. The way Cheney handled it reinforced the idea that "Just because this Boozo is a Class Action Lawyer, doesn't mean he has class."

Don't know about you all but I could see the smiling sleeze bag as he really is when he went personal on the Vice President - on and on about his daughter. Low low low and typical dirty pool that ambulance chasers play. He looked bad - like a passive aggressive jerk.

It was a cheap shot intended to upset Cheney -- using your child as some type of weapon against you is low (did we really expect anything but low from the johnnies) --- DID anyone ask Edwards about his DEAD KID or his FAT WIFE (Moderator: I have a dead kid and am fat so please don't edit this out as crass).
