The Thompson I was referring to was/is Tommy (former Wisconsin Governor and former Department of Health and Human Services Secretary), but it would appear there are also some other options.

...although I'd place them into the definite longshot category.

You're right of course.

Probably the same could be said of Duncan Hunter. He's not on my original list, but there has been a sort of groundswell for him here.

But does he stand a tinkers chance of being elected POTUS?

No.

Regardless of how well qualified he is, and how well regarded he is, the bottom line these days is name recognition, organization, and money.

The best potential Presidential candidate is probably out there in the hinterlands, but we as a country have already picked our President and he/she is in all probablity one of four names on the list at the top of page one.

I'm just gringing, and preparing myself for the onslaught of negative comments, when the Republican and Democratic nominees are finalized.

Newt would get my vote pretty quick. I have 'issues' with ALL of the rest of the ones named.

I like Duncan Hunter.
Newt would get my vote in a second, but I think he would bring a lot of pre-demonized baggage with him from the time he was Mr. Speaker. I've gone to some of his lectures and the man is brilliant. I've even shaken his hand. If he runs I'll vote for him, but I think Duncan Hunter has a better chance of bringing non-GOP votes over from the dark side.
Now if the two of them could team up, it would be a kick-butts-and-take-names team.

Perhaps true Jack but, at this point in time, I'm willing to risk losing the WH just for the voter-education opportunity that a Gingrich candidacy would provide.

While they may, indeed, vote in a Democrat, when they pull the lever they'll KNOW what they're voting for.

Not that I believe any of this, but it is good to see Kerry with a dismal showing.

Newt would be good....if he doesn't run I'll have to go for
Tancredo or Hunter - have to check out Tancredo on stuff other than immigration (tho that alone would be worth voting for him I think...) and Hunter on all stuff.

no way McCain - he is low in the polls -even here in AZ

I don't like any of the names in the list. What's wrong with Newt? I think he is the best among the current conservatives. And for folks to consider President Hillary Clinton or President Obama, to me, is showing that America is a banana republic.

I think Newt is the very best guy out there. I've attended several of his speeches and even shaken the man's hand. He is articulate, extremely well informed, charismatic, knows how to lead and what to do; just everything you could want in a candidate. Unfortunately the Left did a really thorough job of loading him down with demonizing baggage when he was Speaker of the House. I think, unfortunately, that in the eyes of the public, Newt still carries much of that baggage.

No Newt, but Duncan Hunter just announced he was running for President.

Based on support shown him here, I guess I'll have to pay a bit of attention to his campaign, no matter how much of a long-shot it's been termed.

The only one I would support is Condoleezza Rice. I doubt if she will run.
