I sent a little note to them as well, it was polite, but also not real nice,
as I think the cartoonist should have his crayons taken away until he
grows a brain. Very Happy

The cartoon being discussed was published on August 16th:

Quote:
Called "the most influential cartoonist now working" by The New York Times, Pat Oliphant occupies a unique position among today's editorial cartoonists. Widely considered the dean of the profession, he is one of its sharpest, most daring practitioners.

Oliphant, a native of Adelaide, Australia, began his career at his hometown newspaper before moving to the United States in 1964 to work as the political cartoonist at The Denver Post and quickly established himself as one of the best. His work became nationally and internationally syndicated in 1965, and in 1967, only three years after moving to the United States, he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize.

Oliphant's cartoons have been distributed by Universal Press Syndicate since 1980.

Oliphant has been the recipient of numerous other awards in addition to the Pulitzer, including two Reuben Awards and a Best Editorial Cartoonist Award from the National Cartoonists Society, the Thomas Nast Prize in Germany, and the Premio Satira Politica of Italy. His cartoons have been the subject of numerous exhibits (both national and international), including a retrospective at the Smithsonian Institution's National Portrait Gallery in 1990. In 1998, the Library of Congress commemorated the acquisition of 60 of his works with a special exhibition at the Library's Great Hall.

The most widely syndicated political cartoonist in the world, Oliphant is a true artist in every sense of the word. He is an accomplished artist in a variety of media in addition to his cartoon drawings, including sculpture, etching, lithography and monotype, and his artwork has achieved wide acclaim through many museum exhibitions and publications. In addition, his cartoons are published in countless newspapers and magazines worldwide, and specially commissioned work appear in The New Yorker magazine, The New York Times and The Washington Post.

Oliphant has published many books, including "The New World Order," "Oliphant's Anthem" and "Oliphant's Presidents: Twenty-Five Years of Caricature by Pat Oliphant." He has also published nearly 20 books of collected political cartoon drawings.

He and his wife, art gallery owner Susan Conway, divide their time between Washington, D.C. and Sante Fe.

hHere is my reply. I am still pi$$ed and not a very good writere when I see red

To Whom It May Concern,

I am discussed and shocked at the published cartoon by Pat Oliphant in you paper. That is absolutely a disgrace him portraying the Veterans that have protected this great country and paid,in full, the price of the freedom that we enjoy as a bunch of drunken hicks. I think what needs to be done is a full written apology and a thank you for the brave men and women that have paid the price to keep this country free.

E-mail sent to Minneapolis Star Tribune on 8/21/04 (http://www.startribune.com/feedback)

I was shocked to see a cartoon depicting Vietnam veterans as drunks that was said to have been published in your newspaper. This brings back memories of people spitting on vets returning from Vietnam after they faced death in the service of their country.

How ironic that this cartoon appears at the same time as a TV ad featuring POWs who suffered for many years in Viet Cong prisons. I wonder which one of the drunks Pat Oliphant thinks is Paul Galanti the POW who was in prison for seven years? I guess Oliphant didn't get a chance to spit on him when he came home after his release.

That cartoon appeared in the spokesman review, the only news paper in spokane, WA. on thurs last week. I live in a tradition based town. Yet our only news paper is run by the rejects from the NY times. The swift boat controversy has not hardly made the paper at all. Of course the beheading of hostages barely was mentioned either. However abu graib was on the front page for six weeks.

I'm sorry, DenisC, I first assumed this was the same Oliphant as was on the News Hour - PAT Oliphant is the cartoonist.

Excuse me for the misleading comment. I'll correct my post.

This cartoon also appeared in the Philadelphia Inquirer.

It is a continuation of the insults started by John Kerry in 1971.

Pat Oliphant is the name of the cartoonist. Minneapolis Star-Tribune is the newspaper. Anyone get their contact info ?

We need help here in Minnesota. The Star-Trib is so left, I have to lean over and grab onto something just to steady myself enough to pick it up! If you google it, look under "cartoons," and unfortunately, the cartoon shown here is NOT the first one -- though it has sunk lower. I think it accurately depicts what the dems think of the veterans, not just the SBVFT. It's the unspoken real contempt they have while they merrily use them for elections. People should take notice.

The first cartoon I saw made fun of the Swiftees -- and it made me physically sick to look at it. It was soon after the first ad, I think, and it had a Swiftboat in the water loaded down with elephants. So the propaganda began. I am wordless with disgust at this new cartoon and I hope it gets spread all over the place...

My feedback to the paper:

The cartoon showing a handful of Swiftees sitting in a bar and Oliphant's characterization of them as men who didn't even serve in combat in Vietnam brings him and your newspaper to a new low of yellow journalism. I am a 'Nam vet with 19 months in-country (USMC helicopters, 12/66-8/68 ), and I think I'm qualified on this topic. You are talking about 254 Swiftees, the vast majority of them with honorable combat service. Over 60 eyewitnesses are in their book, Unfit For Command, and they describe Kerry very well as the self-serving liar he really is. What is Oliphant's experience in Vietnam? Did he go on missions with Kerry too? More than 300 Swift Boat Vets have now signed the letter stating that Kerry is unfit for CIC. Do you and Oliphant really think that this kind of blatant lying about these honorable veterans is going to fool people? By the way, how did you like the second ad? I doubt that anyone at your highly biased publication will read the book, but that's understandable: people like Oliphant and rags like you aren't interested in the truth.

My e-mail to a friend of mine at the Star-Trib:

The reference to Megan is to my daughter.

Hi Paulette.

The Oliphant cartoon you ran about the Vietnam vets is causing quite a stir in the VN vet circles. They, like I, find it an affront to those of us who neither look, or think that way. John Kerry did enough damage to our image in his 1971 speeches and actions, now that is resurrected by Oliphant through his cartoon. Hurtful is the mildest word of which I can think. What should I tell Megan about how I acted in Vietnam and after when she and her classmates have only Kerry's words and Oliphant's cartoons by which to go? You know me, and how I act, talk, and look. Do I resemble the cartoon figures? I attend reunions, gatherings, and meetings with other VN vets, and none of us act, look, talk, or think that way. The image of us has been distorted since John Kerry lent credence to the picture painted of us by people who either had not been in the military or had not been to VN if they had. For over thirty years, we have been bothered by the nightmares of what happened to us over there, but we have tried to maintain as normal a life as we could. When we came back, we did not want to reveal that we had been to Nam. That was tantamount to saying we were some of the ones who cut off ears or heads, burned villages unnecessarily, and shot people and animals for fun. It defiantly was not fun, nor are the memories of when we HAD to shoot at another human being. Many nights I revisit those times in my sleep.

I wish the Star-Trib would clearly set forth the reason they ran that cartoon. I believe it was in bad taste.

It's almost midnight, and I only got about 4 hours sleep last night for the reasons above. Hope I can get a little more tonight. Sometimes even my $900.oo a month drug infusion does not help.

Let me know how things are going.

Jim

The political activity of Oliphant's daughter is not relevant. His cartoon is another story, and you_should_see some of the editorials in this paper, like http://www.startribune.com/stories/561/4939507.html or http://www.startribune.com/stories/1519/4939470.html. I sent the editor the following:

"Your sneering editorials on the Swift Boat veterans were bad enough, but I was truly disgusted to see you publish the Pat Oliphant cartoon portraying these men as illiterate, drunken clerks and janitors. These 250 veterans served honorably and are highly decorated, with some enduring grave wounds and others years of torture in POW camps.

They deserve at least the same respect as John Kerry. You owe Minnesota veterans a formal apology."

Using the vets -- propping them up or tearing them down -- it's the way of some dems... just use them as their political needs dictate .. I never realized this until now (seeing how they were used by JK in his initial political climb all those years ago). And lots of vets in MN are suporting JK. !!????? One I ran into and wanted to ask how he felt about the mission of the SBVFT responded with deep anger after I said the word O'Neill and I could go no further. I do NOT understand except that for some, political needs out-weigh personal honor.

(Not to mention the tiny little Bush in the left bottom of the cartoon saying "I heartily approve of this message." ..Cute. Real cute.)

I sent in a complaint as well. Hopefully they get so inundated (sp) with complaints that they have to put out an apology.
