Unnamed Republican and Democrat stategists are saying much the same thing. This is from "Kerry Spot" at NRO.

___________________________________________________

The damage to Kerry is likely to get worse starting today, when the ad by the anti-Kerry group Swift Boat Veterans for Truth alleging he lied and does not deserve his medals gives way to one using his 1971 quotes about atrocities committed by GIs.

Both spots aim to undermine Kerry's credibility as a commander-in-chief but the second "is a knee in the groin" to Kerry, said a GOP pollster working with the Bush camp.

"This is a lot broader than Kerry's war record. It's about his character - they are trying to make him look squirrely and political, and it's working," said the Democratic strategist.

The Bush team was chortling at how Kerry has been thrust on the defensive, losing precious momentum and any ability to talk about the economy or the current war.

"He's too busy with his own damage control to score any hits on us," said one senior Bush pol.

The Bush team believes the controversy is the beginning of the end for Kerry. They say Bush will get a bounce from his convention and expect him to begin pulling away amid a new round of attack ads in early September.

A top Bush adviser said Kerry's decision to run on his Vietnam record "opened the door for a careful examination of what he did during the war. . . . From a strategic standpoint, this negates and neutralizes what he thought was an enormous advantage."

I was a kid during the Reagan / Mondale election. Man I would love to see that kind of ass whoopin one more time. Heck, I dont even mind Kerry taking his liberal loving state of Massachussetts.

Jody in Texas,

Yep we spell whoopin without the "g" down around these parts!

At the risk of being pompous....but I haven't seen anyone else say this yet.....A reminder that the Swift Vets are not about electing Republicans or affecting national policy. They are only about defeating Kerry, due to their shared *personal* knowledge of his unfitness, plus general objections to Kerry's dishonorable early 1970s behavior.

Had Kerry (specifically) not been the Democratic nominee, I'm sure a number of the present Swift Vets' group would be supporting the Democratic nominee, and the same number doubtless still do support their State and local Democrats.

I heard Mr. O'Neill state in an interview the other day, that he is an eclectic independent who gives to both parties and voted Gore-Lieberman in 2000.

Hey, if it was anybody but Kerry or Hillary, I would most likely be supporting them. You're right, let's keep our eye on the ball and keep the focus on Kerry being defeated. That's the target, or a lot of us wouldn't be here.

Although the Swift Boat Veterans ads have gotten a lot of publicity over the last few days, the polls are close, and even Fox News seems to be willing to "move on" to other issues, such as Abu Ghraib and the Republican Convention.

It seems like a lot of the talking heads have gotten mired in lots of details about who paid for SBVT ads, whether O'Neill went to Cambodia, whether there was hostile fire, or who was on what boat during an incident described in "Unfit for Command", hoping to shoot holes in the SBVT's arguments, especially since "Navy records" seem support Kerry's version of things (probably because Kerry wrote them).

The "issue" of Kerry's 1971 Senate testimony, and its disastrous conse-quences for the war effort, the POW's, and the South Vietnamese needs to be brought to the forefront, before the news media get caught up with the RNC. Kerry can't deny what he said before the Senate, where reliable records are kept, and if it can be proven that he was negotiating with the enemy in Paris, his credibility will go south in a hurry.

I wonder what PO2 has up his sleeve!

Mr. Kerry tried to use the Titanic metaphor against Bush yesterday. Kerry was at the Franklin Institute in Philly for a fundraising dinner. the Titanic artifacts exhibit is on display there.

What Kerry said was so lame, I'm not going to even repeat it here. Search Google News if you want to see it.

Regarding Bush, I think Kerry mistook the Titanic for its highly-successful sister ship that served for over 20 years, the Olympic. Very Happy

I am the origonal poster of this article.

Some additions as of today:

Do you think that John Kerry would send two envoys to Crawford, TX, to try to persuade President Bush to condemn this add...

Kerry is out there trying his best to change the subject...

The first part of damaging has been done... Today's commercial will be replayed many times.. furthering the damage... The third will be the killer blow....

Take heart fellow veterans, we are winning this battle

Some democrats hate the president so much that they will imply the President's involvement in any tragedy that may occur. Immediately after the planes crashed in Russia, some democrats have already speculated collusion with Putin. It is unbelievably disgusting that anybody can stoop to such level! Unfortunately, it is a no win situation for the president. But the swiftvets have the truth spreading like wildfire now, and the liberals are scared out of their minds. There is no doubt about that!

I sure hope all this is true. That would be great. I do remember the Gallop poll a week ago showed Bush's approval rating up to 51%, 52% now, and the mention that NO President has EVER lots an election when up by 50% or more at this point in the campaign, in the whole time they have taken the poll. And Bush hasn't even had his convention yet, AND SBVT haven't even unloaded the big arsenal YET! AND this new 527 with $35 MILLION starting ad money, and it's VERY pro Bush. All these together bode very badly for mr. kerry. Anyone remember the movie Mr. Roberts? I think it could be aptly said that mr. kerry is now the poor little wizzed on palm tree. Boo hoo. Smile

MarineBrat, that was a VERY profound and true comment you made. The 527s and the effect they have had has have shown only that the truth sells cheaper than lies do. You should make a bumper sticker for that! Smile

Some of you may remember that going into the last election Bush was up by as much as 6 points only two days before the election. Don't always trust the polls. MoveOn has over 2 million workers to get the vote out and plans to spend upward of 25 million in adds in the next several weeks.

We have much work to do to get the SwiftVets points across to voters. This will be a LONG and hard fought battle, but in the end the TRUTH will be known to the american people. Don't let down even for an instant.

Still too much bluster. Stay the course, determinedly. Don't celebrate until the President calls.

The damage that has been to to Mr. Kerry by the Swifties ad is akin to the Willie Brown ads in 1988, which sunk Dukakias. We need to do LOTS more to do to keep this in the public spotlight.

Everytime the Swifties are mentioned, either positively or negatively, people are watching and questions are formed by the voting populace...

Noticed on Drudge, "unfit for Command", is No. 1 on the scan list...

This can't be helping Kerry.

Again, we may have already won this battle, but there are skirmishes yet to be fought...
