Just a thought dmackto, is there other competing papers in the area? If they don't share the same viewpoint or maybe even if they do, they might be interested in this.

Since I frequent Sarasota FL from time to time, I had to respond to Mr. Field as follows, bet I don't get a response....

Dear Mr. Fields,

Perhaps whom ever you took your professional ethics courses from forgot to tell you to never do anything stupid on a slow news day? I am referring to your response to a letter sent to you by one Deborah Mack. Text and addressing of your response is as follows…

Received: from MichaelField (rrcs-24-73-82-112.se.biz.rr.com [24.73.82.112])
From: "Anna Maria Island Sun" amisun@tampabay.rr.com

“You are a Nazi, with a cap N. Go crawl under your swastika and quit mailing us your filth.”

“I did look at the headers. The email was sent from the computer of Michael Fields, the publisher and president. “

It is certainly nice that you show consideration of a letter to the editor without bias.

Please get out your Funk and Wagnall’s and look up “conservative” and compare it to “Nazi”. See if you can find the difference. By the way, your response to the originator is being shared by some fair number of people with your advertisers, as well as with some very conservative people like Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and a few others. Matt Drudge has also been sent a copy.

Wonder how this will play with those folks?

Regards,

You wrote a letter to the paper, which is a legal entity entirely of its own. If someone is trusted sending responses from that paper and employed to do so, the paper is still legally responsible for them. I would seek out competent (not a liberal) legal help and see about a slander suit.

Wow, do they teach that in Journalism 101? That is really an immature and sophomoric response. What an insult, I'm sure you had an ancestor who fought against the National Socialist Party.

Just got finishing sending e-mails to 2 of the advertisers on the papers web site.
A few more to go. Total lack of professionalism by that paper. If the advertisers choose to deal with people of that caliber then they can count me out in using any of their services.

That is a great article.

I sent this to the Sarasota Herald Tribune

Quote:
I sent a letter to the editor of The Anna Maria Island Sun last night. This morning I recieved an email back from the publisher and president of that paper, a Mr. Michael Field.

This was his response:

"You are a Nazi, with a cap N. Go crawl under your swastika and quit mailing us your filth."

What did I send to elicit such an unprofessional and hateful reply? Just my opinion, which is apparently different than Mr. Field's. I didn't make any accusations that are not a matter public record.

Since Dan Rather's 60 Minutes II broadcast, followed by the ABC memo instructing reporters not to hold Kerry and Bush equally accountable, fairness in the media is a serious issue.

I think Mr. Field demostrated his biased and his paper can not be trusted for a fair reporting of the news.

This is the letter to the editor that Mr. Field felt the need to call me a nazi, capital N, over.:

If John Kerry becomes president, the American people will have elected a
self-confessed war criminal and violator of the Geneva and Hague Conventions. Further, they will have elected a man who made an
unauthorized trip to Paris to confer with the Vietcong delegation to peace talks in
1971 and who returned to lobby the US government to accept the Vietcong terms.

In undertaking these activities, Kerry violated US Code (18 USC Sec. 2381 and 18 USC Sec. 953) which codifies the constitution's 14th Amendment, Section 3: 'No person shall ..... hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, ..... who, having previously taken an oath ..... as an officer of the United States .... shall have engaged
in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the
enemies thereof.' (Edited for brevity.)

John Kerry, a sworn US Navy officer, gave aid and comfort to the Vietcong, an enemy of the US. His actions were used by our enemy to increase the suffering of our POWs and lengthen the war by an estimated two years,
resulting in many more casualties. He is honored by the presence of his portrait in the 'War Remnants Museum' in Ho Chi Minh City, a place dedicated to those who aided the 'revolution'.

John Kerry, arguably a traitor, would lead our country into weakness, hoping the worldwide terror would subside into nuisance'.

May God save the United States of America.

I just recieved a reply from Anna Maria Island Sun.

I could use some feedback on how to respond.

Quote:

Deborah
Well, first of all, I never thought that there would be a real live
person
at the other end of that email. I have received so much political
garbage
from computer-generated mass emailings that Ive become inundated,
literally,
to the point that my email account shuts down. Most of this has come
from
the pro-Bush camp and most of it has been really vicious. Many attack
me and
my paper personally, without the slightest clue as to who I am or what
my
small weekly newspaper stands for. They question my patriotism and the
integrity of my paper. They have called me a traitor and said I have
given
aid and comfort to the enemy and that I am part of a larger, media
conspiracy to unseat the president. But it is obvious they are mass
produced
and sent out to a database of newspapers or other publications.
Otherwise,
they wouldn't have accused me of running only pro-Kerry or
pro-"liberal"
articles.

Such a claim is ludicrous, and anyone who has seen a copy of The Sun
would
know it. We are a small weekly newspaper, family owned and operated,
and
have never once - repeat - NOT EVEN ONCE - run any story on Kerry or
Bush.
We run only local news. As in news of our Island. Thats it. Intensely
local
coverage of our home community. We dont have room for statewide or
national
news. We leave that to the dailies. The only way such a story could
appear
in The Sun is if one of the candidates actually visited here, which has
never happened. Then there would be a local connection and it would be
a big
story.

The format of these letters was similiar to yours, right down to the
way the
addresses and dates are printed and the verbiage used to discredit
Kerry.
Thus the confusion and the knee-jerk reaction on my part.

As for debating or refuting any of the points in your email, that is
left to
people better versed than myself, although we might find that we agree
on
any number of issues. But I will say this -- I am weary of all this
partisan
mud-slinging on both sides; weary of the distortions and half-truths;
weary
of the spin placed upon the issues, a spin that would appear to fly in
the
face of reality in many instances. I'm no crusader. Just an average guy
who
is sick of the way politicians conduct themselves when their tenure at
the
public trough is on the line.

I wish the best to you and your family. Regardless of who wins in
November,
we are all still Americans. May God bless us all.

Mike Field, founder, publisher and editor
The Anna Maria Island Sun newspaper

Deborah - FWIW - I don't see that you have to respond to Mr. Fields. Obviously, someone got to him and the thought that his words were going public and might affect his advertising probably caused him to come back to you with softer words. His first response was probably a case of "shoot, aim, draw", which gets you in your own foot. (Does he really respond to each and every spam political message??)

Mr. Field,

While I appreciate the fact that you are being more civil in your response I am disappointed in the content of your email.

You say you didn't expect there would be a real person on the other end. Did you intend to insult a machine by calling it a nazi capital N?

You further begin to give me a list of all the sins the "pro-Bush people" have committed against you. I find it a little more than hard to swallow that your getting hate mail in that volumn if your paper doesn't even get into national politics. Never the less, I did no such thing.

I didn't mention your paper or your previous reporting. I simply mailed you a letter to the editor and you responded by telling me to crawl back under my swastika. I have two Uncles who fought the Nazi's and I take great exception to this insult.

Your reply doesn't even hint of an apology but instead blames Bush People for your behavior. How about a little personal responsibility?

We are all Americans and should be free to discuss and debate things we disagree on without hateful attacks from either side.

Regards,
Deborah Mack

as tasteless as it may be...seig heil! I'll wear a brown shirt for deborah any day!

ignore his 't whining. If his paper really is as nonpartisan as he says, I seriously doubt that he has received the veritable barrage of e-mails that he claims...doesn't add up...especially in a small community....

respond to his grossly unprofessional characterization...in addition to letter to competitors...get a conservative lawyer to draft a pro-bono case (at least a threatening letter...) From my limited legal background, you have not been harmed, therefore, no damages...but since we can't call him out at high noon and defend your honor, the least you can do is put a scare in him... I'm voting tomorrow...I'll think of you and press extra hard!
