Hi Guys,

I think this is a wonderful idea! I spoke to a couple of friends about it
and they agree. However, thinking it's just a little early yet to set it up.
I'm thinking late September, when vacations are over, kids are back to school, etc. it will be
easier to focus community attention on it.
I live in a small town and I know there will be support for this.
We have quite a number of local soldiers serving in Iraq. We have lost two young Marines in the last year.

A suggestion: Most communities (small towns anyway) have a Veteran's Day
parade (Usually in the morning) my husband and I always attend.
I'm thinking it would be easy to have all who come out for the parade to
then assemble at a designated location for the group picture with all the Vets who marched in the parade.
Rather than trying to get people to come back again later in the day.

I agree that late September is the time to market the event. However we only have 89 days until Veteran's Day and the sooner we start identifying those who will take the point for their locations the better. I also agree that every community has its own nuances and that point persons should be given a wide berth on the time and place that works best for their community.

Shawa, I am also hoping this has a fire storm kind of effect. If Dusty gets things going in East TX, and you get things started from what ever part of the country you are in and I get things going in East WI and neighboring communities start picking up on it and then the media before you know it we got all 43,000 communities covered and every uniformed American will get a picture from their home town.

Good idea shawa. Maybe each town can set up the time for the event according to each town's parade schedule.
Instead of thinking of this as a national event, maybe think of it as a local event that is nationwide.
CWV, with a name like theirs I'm wondering if they would not consider sponsoring the event themselves. I went and checked out their website and from what I saw, they should be receptive to that idea maybe.
You know, let them have all the credit for thinking of it and call it their event if they want and get them heavily involved in organizing it. They already have a Coming Events page where they could list it and then I'm thinking that each town that does an event could set up their own website under the Operation Home Town Support umbrella with each site linking back to their site. That may add a little enticement to the idea for them.
I'm hoping they would be receptive to that because the name is really a good one and says exactly what the objective is.

Main thing is to show the troops that America is supporting them.
Just a thought now but maybe we could work in that direction. We could furnish them the ideas we have formulated thus far to get the ball rolling.

Yes Dusty I agree,

Yes I believe it was President Reagan who said "It is amazing what can be accomplished when we are not concerned about who gets the credit". I am a bit of a bull in a china shop and do not have the best diplomatic skills. I already tried to communicate with them that we would like to work along side of them.

As far as diplomacy goes I think you probably can be more effective then me. Perhaps it would be better if you approached them.

I think you do just fine CWV. But if you think it'll help, I'll drop em a line too. Maybe with both of us working on them they will come around.
I have to go out for a few hours right now but soon as I get back I'll make contact with em.

Thanks for getting this idea started. WE know who came up with it. hehe

This is not my ideal.

Last week I was camping under the stars praying for the troops trying to think their thoughts as they look upon the same stars. Then asking our creator, how can all of us Americans who support their sacrifice communicate to them how much we care? And then all of these ideals just started swarming my mind.

I think it's a good idea, if I'm understanding it properly - if I weren't up to my ears in packing boxes and trying to move, I'd probably be participating.

It's very difficult to get something like this moving on short notice, but if you do enlist the aid of the post office, they may want to make it a year-round project.

Good luck! Smile

Apparently the American Legion is answering the call. With a membership of 6,000,000 we just need 42,998 of them to answer the call and take the point for their home towns.

Thank you Mr. Harris,

Please feel free to do what ever you wan't with this ideal.

This is a grass roots movement without organization. We are simply Americans making a call to other Americans to step up and support their own home town troops.

Goal: Get a photograph of home town supporters into the hands of every Uniformed American
When: Veterans Day 2005
Time: What ever works best for your town.
Place: Local landmark that your home town troops will recognize
Contact: Who ever steps up to get the word out and makes arrangements for photogrophy.

Mr. xxxxxxx,
Thank you for that great idea to support our troops. I've forwarded your email to the people in our organization who have the means to publicize your "Hometown Troop Support" efforts to our Legionnaires.

The contact information is submitted below:

I am not a war time Veteran, thus I am not a member of the American Legion. However I think it will take an organization with the mission and size of the American Legion to successfully pull this event together.

At noon on 11/11/05 Veterans Day we plan to get as many Hometown Troop Supporters out to their local post offices for a group photo that will be sent to all active duty personal whose home town address is serviced by the post office where the photo will be taken. We will also include a list of signatures of all the Hometown Troop Supporters who participate in the event. We need a point person for all 43,000 zip codes. Please put out the call for members of the American Legion to take the point for their zip codes.

Now that's cool. Keep us posted CWV. Great.
They bring some serious clout to this idea.

Yes it is, story problem, if you have 6,000,000 Legionnaires and you divide them between 43,000 sites. How many Veterans is that per site? Then add in all the family & friends of the troops. Theirs a chance that some of our troops will get a photo graphs with numbers in the thousands. But the best part of it will be when our home town troops get their pictures with all the signatures of their home town participants. I could care less about the MSM and if they give this any press because the proof will be in the photographs and our troops will know that the folks who mean the most to them from back home stand up in support of them.
