HEADLINE: Vacaville family mourns 24-year-old soldier's death;
Army Spc. Casey Sheehan killed Sunday in Iraq in roadside ambush

BYLINE: By Kevin Clerici - VACAVILLE REPORTER

DATELINE: VACAVILLE

Army Spc. Casey Sheehan re-enlisted in August because he ached to serve his country, to make his family proud, because he hadn't yet made it to Iraq.

His parents, Patrick and Cindy, were concerned, naturally, but that was Casey being Casey -- always giving it his heart and soul -- be it the Boy Scouts, church, school plays or the U.S. Army.

"He told us, 'I'm trained. I'm ready. Don't worry.' He was always ready to serve," Cindy said Monday, her voice trailing off.

On Sunday, uniformed military officials appeared on the Sheehan family doorstep, confirming that Casey, 24, and seven others in his convoy had been killed in an early morning ambush. The Humvee that Casey likely was driving -- in only his second week in the Iraqi desert -- was struck by small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades in a coordinated Shiite militia attack.

Military officials said the attack, which occurred outside southern Baghdad, was one of the worst single losses for American forces in any firefight since the Iraqi capital was captured a year ago. Since U.S. forces invaded, more than 600 American service members have died.

On Monday, prayers were said in Casey's honor at church, the mayor made a house call and scores of family and friends gathered inside the family living room only blocks from Vacaville High School where Casey made the honor roll and was a standout thespian.

"He was a rock," sister Carly, 23, said. "He was always the strong, silent type. He never freaked out about anything." Casey's other siblings, Andy, 19, and Jane, 18, were too shaken to talk, now feeling their own mortality in a way that little brothers and sisters aren't supposed to.

Raised in Norwalk in Los Angeles County, Casey moved with his family to Vacaville in 1993, where they became members of St. Mary's. It was a place Casey, a devout Catholic, would spend countless hours, first as an altar server, then eucharistic minister, while always making himself available to others, particularly youth.

During summers in high school, when he wasn't earning his Eagle Scout rank or watching WrestleMania on TV, he spent nearly every Saturday at the church's youth retreat on Cantelow Road.

"Anything he did, he did it with all his heart. He gave it 1,000 percent," said Father Benedict De Leon, pastor at St. Mary's until 2001 -- the same year Casey enlisted following three years at Solano Community College where he studied theater.

"He came home late one night and, in typical Casey form, belted out, 'You're now looking at the newest recruit in the Army,'" said his dad, Patrick.

In basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C., Casey's first choice was to be a chaplain's assistant. But when that wasn't an option, he chose mechanic's school -- another departure from his childhood passions.

Once they know more, the family will hold a memorial service in town.

Family friend Karla Kennedy bumped into Casey during Christmas, while he was back in town on break. He talked about how much he enjoyed being in the military, she recalled, how proud he was being a mechanic and for passing desert training school.

"He really believed in what he was doing," said Kennedy, director of religious education at St. Mary's. "I am still in shock. He was such a great kid."

Bob Vollmer, Casey's Scout mentor, shared how Casey spearheaded a tremendous effort, as part of his Eagle Scout project, to plant 1,100 trees in Table Mountain in Angeles National Forest, in a remote area favored by campers and hikers.

"He was a fun-loving kid, very in charge of his life," Vollmer said. "He was the oldest [in the troop,] so he always had to deal with the younger kids. He was always leading by example."

It was a trait that made him a good fit in the Army, his mother said. She got the feeling from him he was going to make a career of it.

A casualty officer is scheduled to visit the family today. "He never did anything wrong. He never gave us any trouble," she said. "He joined the Army to serve his country. I don't know why this happened. But we know he is in heaven now."

How can she dishonor the memory of her son when she clearly knows he died for something he believed in from day one?

She ought to be ashamed of herself.

Support MoveOn.org Political Action
Help Air Cindy Sheehan's Ad
During last week's debate, President Bush said, "I understand how hard it is. I get the casualty reports every day. I see on the TV screens how hard it is." But that's the problem. President Bush doesn't understand the "ground truth" of what's going on in Iraq, and the TV screen is as close as he's ever been to the reality of this war.

Last week, a group called RealVoices.org introduced a series of ads that brings this reality home -- with the voices of families who have lost sons or daughters in Iraq. We were especially touched by the statements of Cindy Sheehan, whose son Casey was killed on April 4th of this year. The interview is very difficult to watch, because the hurt and sense of betrayal is so real. But we think the American people need to hear what Cindy Sheehan has to say. So we're now working to raise $2 million, to air Cindy Sheehan's ad in key battleground states, starting this Friday.

Cindy Sheehan Digs Defensive Position at Bush Compound
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By Political Satirist Chris Davis
Aug 10, 2005

Crawford, Texas—The mother of yet another American soldier killed in Iraq, Cindy Sheehan, 48, of Vacaville, California has dug a defensive position near President Bush’s compound in Crawford, Texas, refusing to move until Bush comes out of the compound. She’s set up on a narrow strip of land between the hardtop of Prairie Chapel Road and a drainage ditch, giving her the drop should President Bush decide to leave the ranch.

“I plan on staying here the entire month of August or until he comes out to talk to me,” she claimed. “And don’t think he can get away. I’ve got his whole perimeter covered with mainstream media cameras maintaining interlocking fields of vision. You’re gonna see me, Mr. President. Oh, yes you will!”

Bush reportedly met with the Sheehan family and other families of fallen troops in June 2004 at Fort Lewis near Seattle. Cindy Sheehan has commented that she didn’t get across to Bush how misguided she believes his ignorant policies are, or how much she hates him, so she decided to act against him.

“We’re going to bring it to the attention of America this time, Mr. President,” Sheehan said, pouring another bottle of water over her exhausted, sweat-soaked body. There’s nothing you can do about it. How do you like those First Amendment apples? Hmmm?”

This isn’t the first time Cindy Sheehan has had to slap down President Bush. It is said she’s been involved in protests against Bush since last year. According to reports, she founded Gold Star Families for Peace, described on its website as made up of “families of soldiers who have died as a result of an illegal war for oil.” It was also noted that she helped form a political group that ran TV ads in the fall of 2004 asking people to vote against Bush.

The ads were graciously picked up by MoveOn.org, an anti-Bush and pro-America group, and were broadcast in several states.

Sheehan said she wants to tell Bush not to use her son’s death as a reason to continue the war. “Why are Jenna and Barbara Bush and the other children of the architects of this disastrous war not in harm’s way, if the cause is so noble,” she asked. “The answer is so simple. Conservative chicken hawks expect everyone else’s children to participate but their own! If Mr. Bush thinks I’d be impressed and intimidated by Joe Hagin, White House deputy chief of staff and Stephen Hadly, national security advisor, sent to talk me, he’s sorely mistaken. Come out of the compound! Don’t hide behind the soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines and coastguardsmen that fight in the war on terror. Be man enough to face me, Mr. President!”

“What you’re seeing with that mom trying to meet with President Bush is echoes of Vietnam,” said Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-CA. “Because no one is seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I can still see the protests in the streets. God it was beautiful! You go girl!”

“I think we should move for impeachment,” said Sen. John Kerry, D-MA. Ignoring an American mother should be an impeachable offense. I think it’s high time we made it one.”

Soon to be President Hillary Clinton spoke out, urging President Bush to set a date for withdrawal from Iraq in order to honor the memory Cindy Sheehan’s son. “I’ve heard the most repulsive rumors, said Sen. Clinton, D-NY. “They’re planning to arrest her on Thursday. And if that doesn’t work, they’re planning on having the Secret Service mow her down ‘accidentally’ with some of their cars. End the war in Vietnam, Mr. President. Bring the troops home now!”

“I just know Rush Limbaugh better keep his mouth shut on this protest,” fired Sen. John McCain, R-AZ. “He’s been making far too many excuses for President Bush and this administration. For once, I’d like to see him use some moderation. He’s one of the reason this mother suffers now. But he’ll never see that.”

As Thursday draws near, Ms. Sheehan digs in more and sets up a perfect perimeter defense, making it inevitable for an appearance sooner or later. President Bush must face her, swallow his bitter pill and utter, “The loss of a loved one in the war on terror is heartbreaking, but will happen in defense of liberty. So don’t ruin his hallowed memory by staging this phony, partisan political show.”

MoveOn.org, an anti-Bush and pro-America group

Confused Can someone help me out? I can't find any pro_American positions that MoveOn.org has taken. I guess being anti-Bush is being pro-American in their twisted logic.

This is really sad. Sounds like the Michael Moore crowd has got here so twisted up that she is ready for the guys with the white coats to come in and take her away. I trust their is a LZ at the Crawford ranch and President Bush will just fly over her.

For every action there is a reaction or in the words of Ward Churchill “Blow Back”. Well we have the pent up “Blow Back” of America’s mistreatment of our Veterans who served in Vietnam. We have the “Blow Back” of 40 years of being wrongfully depicted by Hollyweird. It is time to tap into this energy for the good of this generation of troops and the war on terror. Maybe instead of meeting with Bush, she should be met by a few hundred Iraqi Mothers and Wives who lost Sons and Husbands to Saddams cruel reign of terror over the country. Let her tell them Bush is a war criminal and all this is for nothing.

BOR found another greiving anti-war mother to put on. This one said she had been against the war from day one. She crawfished around what her deceased son thought about it.
Looks like the one camped out in Crawford is damaged goods so they have found another one with less baggage. (no 180 turn around in her past to negate her views)
Never did see an interview with a mother that lost a son with an opposing view to 'balance' things out. I guess that would be too much to ask of the 'Fair and Balanced' channel.
They will just keep running this stuff on us til enough people start screaming and we lose another one here at home.
We have seen this before people.
