Did 9/11 Panel Squelch Freeh Bombshell?

<snip>
Writing in the Wall Street Journal in May 2003, Freeh charged that the Clinton White House was either "unable or unwilling to help the FBI" gain access to key witnesses in the Khobar case.

"After months of inaction, I finally turned to the former President Bush, who immediately interceded with Crown Prince Abdullah on the FBI's behalf," Freeh revealed.

"Mr. Bush personally asked the Saudis to let the FBI do one-on-one interviews of the detained Khobar bombers. The Saudis immediately acceded."

Thanks to Bush's intercession, Freeh said, his agents were given "direct access to the Saudi detainees."

"This was the investigative breakthrough for which we had been waiting for several years," the former FBI director proclaimed.

sorta contradicts what Sandy Burgler is supposed to be saying in his statement for 60 Minutes

wonder if GHWB will confirm this....?

Bush 41 is not involved and GWB 43 isn't going to do anything. It's a matter of whether you want to believe Louis Freeh or Slick Willy and the Clintonistas. I'll go with Louis Freeh if forced to make a chioce. (Or if not for that matter.)

Freeh was on MTP this am ( I missed it) according to this FReeper thread he handled himself very well. Below is partial transcription by FReeper poster, there are a few more posts of the interview at the link

MEET THE PRESS (NBC): former FBI Director Louis Freeh.

Tim: Looked at transcripts and translator confirms that Clinton never asked for funds for Library.

Freeh: For over 2 years I pressed the president and his national security advisor to get FBI agents into prison cells in Saudi Arabia to talk with people. We got no movement on that request.

Then Former President Bush met with the Crown Prince and made the same simple request to let FBI agents into that prison. The Ambassador of Saudi Arabia and the head of counter terrorism (who will confirm information about the source), and the Crown Prince referenced his meeting with former President Bush and said he'd allow FBI agents into the prison.

Tim: Clinton met with the Crown Prince and so did Gore and the yall could have affected the permission to get agents into the prison.

Freeh: What do you say about a president and national security advisory who for 2.5 years said that no stone will be left unturned who never asked me for the status on the case!

When I told Sandy Burger that we had evidence that Iran was involved in the attack on the Towers, he first said who knows about this and then said "it's heresay".

We presented the case to the US Attorney in Columbia who told me I had no case and I said "with all due respect, we do". Clinton wrote a letter to the Iranians which said we think you might be involved in the attack and if you don't we'll look into withholding trade stuff. They never told me they were writing that letter.

The letter was delivered to the spiritual leader, it was mis-delivered. It's the equivalent of writing John Gotti a letter and asking him to cooperate but not telling the US Attorney you wrote the letter.

Tim: Would you debate this with Berger on this show?

Freeh: Yes.

Tim: Gingrich said that if Clinton took money from the Saudi's, it's a criminal offense of the first order. Would you go under oath?

Freeh: I wasn't at the meeting and am not making the allegation myself but it's consistent with the other evidence . I don't think it's a criminal offense, by the way, but it's an ethical offense.

Tim: Clinton wrote a book called My Life and he wrote he was getting concerned about the FBI and Freeh's leadership.

Freeh: He should have fired me, if he felt that way. It was a regular routine at the White House where the press spokesman would say the WH thinks that Freeh is doing the best he can. Clinton didn't like the FBI. We were always investigating him and he didn't get that it wasn't personal but we had a responsibility to investigate allegations.

Clinton turned the office into a personal disgrace.

Tim: Richard Clarke said you should have spent time fixing the mess at the FBI and pursuing terrorists.

Freeh: We didn't get the funding we wanted. (Goes through the list of what they didn't get.)

Neither Bush nor Clinton put national security councils on a war footing before 9/11. We'd indicted OBL twice and put him on the FBI most wanted list.

I met with Musarref in Pakistan, who was no help, by the way. We were doing what we could while they were blowing up warships and embassies and we didn't declare war. That's what was going on in the Clinton White House.

For those who missed today's MTP, and interested in seeing it, MTP will be reaired tonight at 10:00pm ET on MSNBC.

I am currently, slowly reading MY FBI (caring for my three small children doesn't give me much time to read). So far, I am very impressed by Mr. Freeh. I watched today's MTP, and yes, Mr. Freeh handled himself very very well. I especially loved the part where he said Clinton turned the office into a personal disgrace. I also watched him interviewed by Katie Couric on the Today Show, and he did a fantastic job on there as well.
