The very FIRST Presidential Proclamation ever issued by a United States President set aside Thanksgiving as a day for the people of the United States of America. It was issued at the city of New York, the 3rd day of October, A.D. 1789 to assign Thursday, the 26th day of November as a day of Thanksgiving.
Since the body of the message is quite politically incorrect by today's maligned and corrupted standards, I only give a link to the words of George Washington rather than include his actual message text. I recommend that you read it if you are not offended by its content.

October 3, 1789 and October 3, 1863 both fell on a Saturday, too.
Apparently, our government worked harder in the old days. _________________ Former "War Criminal" |

As have many of us here, I too would like to give thanks to all those before us who served....One perhaps more than the others, my dad, a Petty Officer 2nd Class, WWII...as I was thumbing thru the family bible, looking for a specific item (see below), I ran across an old folded crayola drawing on construction paper of the American Flag that my dad had made a day after his 7th birthday, Nov. 11, 1918...as he said "The day peace was declared"...not Armistice Day, or Veterans Day, just "The day peace was declared"...scanned it for "the kids".
Simple concept. Oh, and the verse I had been searching for was, as I like to call it now, the SwiftVet Psalms...in Psalms 107: "They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters; These see the works of the Lord and his wonders in the deep, for he commandeth and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof." ...
one of my personal favorites, a lot to be thankful for...
