EXCLUSIVE

STATEMENT FROM DAN RATHER:

Last week, amid increasing questions about the authenticity of documents used in support of a 60 MINUTES WEDNESDAY story about President Bush's time in the Texas Air National Guard, CBS News vowed to re-examine the documents in question—and their source—vigorously. And we promised that we would let the American public know what this examination turned up, whatever the outcome.

Now, after extensive additional interviews, I no longer have the confidence in these documents that would allow us to continue vouching for them journalistically. I find we have been misled on the key question of how our source for the documents came into possession of these papers. That, combined with some of the questions that have been raised in public and in the press, leads me to a point where—if I knew then what I know now—I would not have gone ahead with the story as it was aired, and I certainly would not have used the documents in question.

But we did use the documents. We made a mistake in judgment, and for that I am sorry. It was an error that was made, however, in good faith and in the spirit of trying to carry on a CBS News tradition of investigative reporting without fear or favoritism.

Please know that nothing is more important to us than people's trust in our ability and our commitment to report fairly and truthfully.

So Mr. Rather, this raises four questions....

1. How the heck did you get misled when a bunch of guys in pajamas and your own experts saw right through them as the forgeries they are?
2. How the heck did your source come into possession of these papers?
3. Did anyone at anytime associated or a part of the Kerry Campaign, DNC or MoveOn.org provide you these documents or vouch for these documents prior to the story airing?
4. Was Max Cleland your "unimpeachable" source?

Should read: in good faith and in the spirit of trying to Kerry on a CBS News tradition of investigative reporting without fear or favoritism.

Pressure now needs to come down on CBS to admit the documents were frauds. This would then remove the cover of protection of sources since forgery is a crime. They need to cooperate. This is a clear case of election fraud.

Our response must be swift Wink Get the letters ready. Media blast coming...

A retired Texas National Guard official mentioned as a possible source for disputed documents about President Bush's service in the Guard said he passed along information to a former senator working with John Kerry's campaign.

Sound like an official connection to the Kerry campaign to me.

1..Bill Burkett sends email to Kerry Campain about counter attack.

2..Max Cleland (former senator now with the Kerry campaign) meets with Bill Burkett (retired TNG official) to get forged documents.

3..Kerry campaign delivers documents to CBS.

4..CBS 60 Minutes runs story.

Could anyone come up with a reason that this would not be a connection?

What happened to Rather's bluster about our not being concerned enough about the CONTENTS of the memos?

This statement does not address the fact that the CONTENT is false, not just that the documents are forged.

We need to turn the tables on these bass-turds and make them address the issue of the CONTENT .

I want a full admission that the CONTENTS are pure fabrication, and I want the sources revealed. Rather must be fired, and I want a full admission by him this was a scheme to KERRY forward election tampering.

We absolutely can not let them get away with this Pravdaesque behaviour.

A subtle fact not being emphasized is that Burkett was in the ARMY National Guard, not in the Air National Guard. How did he get his hands on Bush's records in the first place? He claims he saw them in a trash can -- what was HE doing there? -- but common practice would have been to burn or shred them, not throw them in a trash can accessible to anyone. Does not pass the smell test.

THERE IS A GOD

Dan Rather's confession (of sorts) has now upstaged John Kerry's rant from this morning.

The 24-hour news cycle will forget Kerry's speech and focus on Dan Rather as NEWSHOG.

Keep in mind that there is only one entity benefitting from all of this:

The Hillary for President in '08 Campaign.

The Clintons have loaned their "experts" who have taken over the Kerry campaign to "help", and now they are triangulating atop the fray and laughing all the way down the campaign trail for '08....guess they need more furniture.
