Senator Tom Harkin(D) attached an amendment to a defense appropriations bill to ban Rush Limbaugh and his one hour program from Armed Forces Radio. It passed the Senate. Any thoughts?

Yeah, I think Harken should be impeached! Fired? Sent TAD to Saudi Arabia? But for sure hammered with letters from members of the military. Leave Rush on, fair it and balance it with Franken, and wait for them to get really pissed off. Laughing

The better question is; Why are we paying for NPR?

That's a good question. Another one would be: Where were all the Senate Republicans when this bill passed?

I'm beginning to think that problem is that "conservatives" remember a little about what it is to be the "compleat gentleman". The rabble on the left seem to be willing to demonstrate in the streets and engage in civil disobediance while we sit back and in private say...What ********..how plebian!.

Maybe it's time for a "Radical Conservative Movement"....I know it sound oxymoronic but......it might at least get some attention from tabloids like the NY Slimes and the Washrag. Wink

As I understand it, the Harkin amendment was considerably watered down before it passed, calling only for oversight to ensure that the AFRTS was airing a "balance" of views.

When you look at the AFRTS scheduling, you can quickly see that NPR broadcasting is heavily represented - they could add the other two hours of Rush Limbaugh and still not have an equal representation of views, because the editorial programming is strongly shifted to the left.

So, if the Armed Forces oversight committee really takes this in hand, they'll add those extra two hours of Limbaugh and throw in Hannity's program, as well. These two are THE most pro-military talk-radio hosts on the air. It would be a breath of fresh air to our troops to hear that they are appreciated and supported.

Something they are extremely unlikely to hear on "All Things Considered." Rolling Eyes

You seem to know more about it than I do, Navy. I just kind of caught it in passing and threw it out there to consider. I haven't seen or heard any in depth reports about it so please share with us some details if you can.

Neatly attached to a defense appropriations Bill!! One of the many reasons I shall never be in the Senate or the House is that such a trick would lead to verbal rage from the floor directed very specifically at Harkin and any others who supported him. As President, I would veto the Bill until such time the lawmakers start respecting the freedom of speech provisions or the Constitution.

Just picking up bits here and there. Hubs is the one that caught this one for me - I mentioned last week that Harkin was trying to remove Limbaugh from AFRTS and he told me that the final version had been watered down:

From Limbaugh's site:http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/daily/site_061704/content/truth_detector.member.html (you have to be a member, I think?) A snippet:
Quote:
Now, the Armed Forces Radio Network has over 1,100 different programs. NPR is all over the Armed Forces Radio Network. Only one hour of this program -- the first hour, this hour -- is on the Armed Forces Radio Network, which is why I'm mentioning this in this hour. Here you have a United States senator doing this in the guise that there's "not balance," that I am not balanced, that there are no programs like mine. The fact is, mine is the only one of its kind ideologically on the Armed Forces Radio Network, to speak of. The rest of the Armed Forces Radio Network is pretty left. It's pretty liberal. It would have to be with as much NPR as is on it.

From http://www.pardonmyenglish.com/index.php
Quote:
After Limbaugh and others exposed him, Harkin retracted his original amendment, settling for a water-down version that doesn’t specifically target Limbaugh and calls simply for AFR to “make a greater effort to provide balanced representation of political viewpoints on its airwaves to American service members around the world.”

I sure hope the oversight committee takes this amendment seriously!!!

Our soldiers could be listening to people who respect what they do and why they're doing it instead of the NPR trash that's currently the most highly represented organization in AFRTS programming.

Well, we'd be blowing gaskets together - I can't imagine why half the Senate wasn't screaming about this! Where's the outrage?

For heaven's sake, people are up in arms about several companies making the FINANCIAL decision not to air Howard Stern's show and he's screaming about censorship, but here's a clear case of Congress attempting to limit free speech on the taxpayer's airwaves, REAL censorship, and our Senators didn't get ticked off?

In-freakin'-credible.

I've seen a thread oven on ** complaining about Rush being on AFRN.

They're all worked up about it too...

Some nerve there... trying to tell the GI's what they can and cannot listen to.

Good question! How long do you think NPR would last if they had to compete in the real world? Undisputed members of the useful idiot society.

I am not surprised at all at what any liberal will do to bring secularism and socialism to this country. I am not upset! In this day and age, most in the military have access to internet and streaming audio. It is like prohibition. Take away the booze, and the more it is in demand. Rush just needs to allow free downloading of his daily shows. They will be copied and passed around.

The more that liberals perform (and I mean perform, like a pet animal, stand up, set down, roll over, bark) in public, the more they show their true collectivist character and gang values. As hard as they try, they cannot hide truth, fact, and reason. They will never stop the self determined individual. That is the eternal battle, the individual versus the gang, be the gang uniform be leathers, suits and ties, or robes.

Liberal college administrators today are creating "speech codes" so as not to allow anyone to create "Discomfort" in another. As if the Constitution gives all the right to be free from discomfort. In truth, the speech codes are more aimed at conservatives, and Christian organizations, to shut them up. It is all starting to blow back on them, for conservatives are now taking lawsuit actions to insure they apply to all campus groups.

It is just another step in moral equivalence, and cultural diversity.

If the left had anything to say that people wanted to listen too, they wouldn't have to resort to underhanded means to get their word out. In a competitive market, they fail since they have no real audience. NPR is their only source and really, who listens to that?

Their new network, AirAmerica radio (or something like that) is failing right off the bat. They have learned that people are sick and tired of being told how terrible they really are.

So, now they want to push their filthy lies off on our military? Our military people have enough to worry about over there without being told by Al Franken what losers and baby killers they are, all in "support" of them, I'm sure Rolling Eyes

Hmmmm, Tokyo Rose, Hanoi Hannah and now, Al Qeada Al? Sorry, but I didn't find him funny on Saturday Night Live either.

You know why liberal radio is such a failure?

Because their demographic sucks!

You can't sell advertising for these shows.

As a matter of fact, if you think about what that means, you are left with the inescapable conclusion that the vast majority of Americans do not feel those shows are worth listening to.

Of course, those people take that as a point of pride, as they sneer at the rest of us and dismiss us as NASCAR fans, or some other equally condescending cliche of class warfare.

They are "oh so smarter" than us, you see...

With such brite people, you would think it would have occurred to them that they might... possibly... by some slim chance... be wrong?

But then, the Narcissism of the Enlightened won't allow that, will it?
