Dear Sirs:

I have a problem that I hope you can help me with. My co-worker continually blasts John Kerry's military record in Viet Nam, saying he is a fake. He cites the Swift boat veterans.

I've seen and heard many times that those guys' claims have been discredited, and proven false. I just can't find where. I really need a link, or some place where I can show this nut once and for all that Kerry is being slimed by those guys. He keeps saying they haven't been proven wrong, but I know from the news that they have. I just can't show him, and it is really frustrating.

I don't know what I'm thinking abc will reply with. How can they provide documentation of something that doesn't exist? Just fishing, I suppose. I just got sick of seeing that the "swift boat veterans' claims have [mostly] been discredited" and decided to ask them to put up or shut up. I knew they have been taken to task on that point numerous times from here and elsewhere, and would just ignore another challenge. Then came the germ of an idea....catching flies with honey. I figured cBS was in way too much of a defensive posture to bite on this lure.

I wrote a similar letter to my local CBS affiliate. I figure that the more we ask them this question, the better the chance that someone with actual journalistic instincts will become interested in reporting the truth. Or, they may be able to pressure their networks to give them some details to answer the viewers/readers' questions.

Hey Nonlinear, I’ve done something similar a while back on a psychology forum where my POV was being inappropriately dismissed by a big ego moderator—so I posted using a female name and really kissed up to the guy. Since he had the ego, it worked pretty well because I managed to walk him down the primrose path and then made him look like an AH. But of course he still never really saw/acknowledged the error of his ways.

Nevertheless, your above attempt inspired me to rewrite my email to Ebert regarding his review of his Kerry Upriver movie and concurrent SBVT trashing (I’ll let y’all know if ever hear anything from the AH, but don’t hold breath):

Mr. Roger Ebert:

I’ve always enjoyed your excellent movie reviews.

Thank you for your superb review of the new John Kerry movie and the "Big lie" that the Swift Boat Veterans who served with Kerry are attempting to "shamelessly challenge the war record of a wounded and decorated veteran."

John Kerry won five medals in only four months in Vietnam and then returned home to tell the truth about his fellow veterans committing all kinds of atrocities, even admitting that he himself committed the same kind of atrocities, and then had the courage to even throw his medals and ribbons away.

When I see the Bush ads where the Swift Boat veteran POWs are complaining about how Kerry's testimony supposedly hurt them, I get so angry. Those POWs have no right to challenge Kerry's war record just because Kerry told the truth about them committing all those atrocities.

Keep up the good work Mr. Ebert!
