There's a site that many folks use to check if a story is based in reality, or an "Urban Legend" which doesn't ring true.

Check THIS out:

http://www.snopes.com/politics/kerry/service.asp

And check out the sources used for the determination:
Quote:

Brinkley, Douglas. Tour of Duty: John Kerry and the Vietnam War.
New York: HarperCollins, 2004. ISBN 0-06-056523-3.

Klein, Joe. "The Long War of John Kerry."
The New Yorker. 2 December 2002.

Kranish, Michael. "John F. Kerry: Candidate in the Making — Part 2: Heroism, and Growing Concern About War."
The Boston Globe. 16 June 2003.

Perhaps enough SwiftVet supporters writing to Snopes could change the status of the claim to at LEAST "Multiple Values" status instead of "False" (which was back in February).

Let's get them to update!

Hate to reply to my own post, but as a disheartening coincidence, my Dem friend I've been trying to turn on to the SwiftVet cause just sent me an e-mail quoting the Snopes posting! Evil or Very Mad

I use the Snopes site myself sometimes to check on the things some folks send my way.

The site usually seems to do their research, so let's get them to research this site, and request that they update the status of the story.

Here's where you can send a comment to Snopes:

Thanks,

Here's mine:

Quote:
Hello,

I enjoy your site, but believe the accuracy of this article:

http://www.snopes.com/politics/kerry/service.asp

Should at the very least be updated to "Multiple Values" status instead of "False"

There are still questions being debated, inconsistencies uncovered, and truths exposed.

As further reference, I submit the website swiftvets.com and the recently released book "Unfit for Command" by John O'Neill.

Thank you for your time.

Wonder if they'll consider it?

I emailed Snopes a while back, nothing has changed on that site for some time....but I would suggest the term "Fishy" is a very poor metric to measure against.

The Cambodia flip flops and current "we ain't saying nothing more for a while on Cambodia" postion makes it "Fishy" by any measure.

I would not be concerned Snopes too much.

The book is being read...its the bestseller...the tide is turning

I've been looking for a good debunking of this snopes page http://www.snopes.com/politics/kerry/service.asp
It's the one that always seems to get posted along with the "swift boat liars" comment.
I just don't have the time or enough in depth knowledge to adequately debunk that when others use it as "proof".
It's be so nice if there was a lie by line debunk of it. Sad

Snopes is as bad as factcheck...their fact-checking stops and the spin begins when questions with political ramifications arise.

I am amazed that snopes put this on their site. I can't believe it would be treated as possible urban legend.

On urband legends, Snopes is pretty good about debunking them. When it comes to actual events, I feel their partisanship gets in the way.

They also have a section about Kerry's rudeness and make it out to be undetermined, inspite of mulitple claims about it as fact.

I've sent them a pretty thorough list of the points on the Swifts' side and they've never acknowledged or asked questions or anything. I think I got an autoresponse, but maybe not even that.

Looking through some of the other political stuff on her site, it looks like she's pretty firmly anti-Bush, anti-war, possibly anti-military. And pro-Kerry.

It's a shame, too, because snopes used to be THE definitive site - she did her own in-depth research and backed up the facts.

If this is the case then spread the word that all Bush supporters should no longer use Snopes. Again, a lack of use for a Web Site is tantamount to a Boycott. Very effective.

Yes! That angers me. No more snopes for me. Try truthorfiction.com instead until we can figure out how they lean(or severely tilt)..

Here's what I sent them:

Dear Sirs;

With regards to your Kerry Vietnam Service article at: http://www.snopes.com/politics/kerry/service.asp I notice that your resources utilized to determine the "False" status fails to include the enormous amount of critical analysis found on the Swiftvets web site forum: http://www2.swiftvets.com/phpBB2/index.php

I suggest if you'll open your investigation enough to consider that research produced by scores of Swift boat veterans that you'll have a much more thorough understanding of the debate raging over Senator Kerry's self proclaimed war hero stature and his fitness to lead America as Commander in Chief.

Respectfully,

J Lingle

They state that there are only two of them answering and researching...hard to believe they are held in such high esteem.

Rdtf,

I just went to www.truthorfiction.com and did a quick read through of the Kerry / SBVT analysis and find it quite lame.

They make it sound like SBVT ran a single ad, were dismissed by the Kerry campaign as a partisan supported smear group without merit and that's it.

Has anyone invited them to visit the forum and really investigate?
