Tell Sen. Kerry to Join the Pledge for an All Volunteer Military

"It's no secret, the all-volunteer U.S. military, especially the Army, Marines, and many Reserve units, are stretched thin in Iraq and Afghanistan," CBS News anchor Dan Rather said leading into a recent "news" segment. "So what about bringing back the draft?" he continued, "A lot of Americans are worried about that. Where do the presidential candidates stand?"

President Bush stated without equivocation during the first Presidential Debate that he will not support a draft and will upon his reelection retain an all volunteer military.

Sen. Kerry, however did not join into such a pledge and instead called for adding 2 new Divisions and to double the numbers in our Special Forces. While he did not suggest a draft at that point, he is on record saying that if a large mobilization were needed then a draft would be the "only fair way to do it." To the surprise of many Americans, Democrats authored the only recent bills to reinstate the draft. Senate Bill S.89 was introduced in January 2003 by Sen. Ernest F. Hollings (D-SC) and had no Republican co-sponsors. A companion bill was introduced in the House of Representatives the same month. It was sponsored by Democrats Charlie Rangel (D-NY), Jim McDermott (D-WA), John Lewis (D-GA), Pete Stark (D-CA), and Neil Abercrombie (D-HI). Many Republicans believed that these Democrat bills were a pretense to suggest that the President would call for the draft. However, they could be used to give Sen. Kerry cover for quiet plans for such reinstatement.

The Republican-controlled House of Representatives overwhelmingly rejected the bill Tuesday. Does Kerry intend to request reinstatement of the draft once elected President? He has not ruled it out and has said that use of a draft is the "only fair way" to bring about a significant build-up. He has openly called for such a build-up and has not suggested how he would do it without a draft. The National Federation of Republican Assemblies has established an online petition to call on Sen. Kerry to pledge his support of an all volunteer military and opposition to a new draft.
