It's not the Economy stupid -- it's Iran!
The past is not an issue for a majority of Kerry supporters. That is a fact.
Self interests is the primary reason a person supports a candidate. That is also a fact.
The only point that will sway opinion away from the rhetoric is concerns of personal security.
The question that voters have to address is if they are clear on John Kerry's position on Iran.
Does his position clearly make them feel more secure by calling Iran's bluff on nuclear weapons after we offer/provide Iran with nuclear fuel.
Is this evidence of responsible leadership?

Boston, MA - Senator John Kerry released the following statement today in response to the President’s speech in Tennessee:
“The gravest threat we face is terrorists or hostile states getting their hands on a nuclear weaponSince that dark day in September, have we reached out to our allies and forged an urgent global effort to ensure that nuclear weapons and materials are secured? Have we taken every step we should to stop North Korea and Iran’s nuclear programs? Have we restructured our intelligence agencies and given them the resources they need to keep our country safe?”
“The honest answer, in each of these areas, is that we have done too little, often too late, and even cut back our efforts. It’s not enough to give speeches – America will only be safer when we achieve results. The facts speak for themselves -- there was less nuclear weapons materials secured in the two years after 9/11 than in the two years before. North Korea has reportedly quadrupled its nuclear weapons capability in the past year. Iran is developing a nuclear weapons capability. Afghanistan has become a forgotten front in the war on terror.
“As president, my number one security goal will be to prevent terrorists from gaining weapons of mass murder. I have proposed an ambitious and aggressive plan for dramatically reducing the threats from nuclear terrorism -- we will greatly accelerate work to secure nuclear materials at risk and invest the time and leadership needed to address the nuclear threats in North Korea and Iran. I will appoint a National Director of Intelligence so that there is one individual with responsibility and accountability for intelligence operations.”

Washington, DC - Statement by John Kerry’s Senior Advisor for National Security Affairs, Dr. Susan Rice, on the IAEA's report that Iran plans to begin processing tons of raw uranium that can be used to make nuclear weapons:
“We rushed into war with Iraq because George Bush told the American people that Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction and had ties to al Qaeda -- neither proved to be true. Now we learn that Iran, which is a leading state sponsor of terrorism, is yet another step closer to nuclear weapons capability. Yet the Bush Administration has stood on the sidelines while this nuclear program has advanced.
“The Bush administration has demonstrated time and time again their incompetence in dealing with the real threats that we face, and we are less safe because of it. A nuclear armed Iran poses an unacceptable risk to us and our allies. It is past time for the administration to develop a tough and effective strategy for dealing with Iran - and to show real leadership when it comes to addressing the most dangerous threats this country faces. We must get off the sidelines and lead our allies to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.”

Prevent Iran From Developing Nuclear Weapons.
A nuclear armed Iran is an unacceptable risk to the national security of the United States and our allies in the region. While we have been preoccupied in Iraq, Iran has reportedly been moving ahead with its nuclear program. We can no longer sit on the sidelines and leave the negotiations to the Europeans. It is critical that we work with our allies to resolve these issues and lead a global effort to prevent Iran from obtaining the technology necessary to build nuclear weapons. Iran claims that its nuclear program is only to meet its domestic energy needs. John Kerry's proposal would call their bluff by organizing a group of states to offer Iran the nuclear fuel they need for peaceful purposes and take back the spent fuel so they cannot divert it to build a weapon. If Iran does not accept this offer, their true motivations will be clear. Under the current circumstances, John Kerry believes we should support the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) efforts to discern the full extent of Iran's nuclear program, while pushing Iran to agree to a verifiable and permanent suspension of its enrichment and reprocessing programs. If this process fails, we must lead the effort to ensure that the IAEA takes this issue to the Security Council for action. |
