Reeve's Widow to Campaign With Kerry
By MARY DALRYMPLE, Associated Press Writer
GIRARD, Ohio - Christopher Reeve's widow, Dana, plans to join Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites) for a campaign speech about the importance of science, research and innovation.
Reeve supports Kerry's intention to expand federally funded embryonic stem cell research. The campaign said she approached the Massachusetts senator about making what probably will be her only campaign appearance, a speech Thursday in Columbus, Ohio.
Kerry has asked former Vice President Al Gore (news - web sites) to campaign for him this weekend in Florida, site of the recount that swung the election to Bush four years ago.
To many Democrats, Gore is the living symbol of an election they believe the GOP stole from them. Kerry's campaign hopes Gore can convince those Democrats that their votes are urgently needed in an election that could be just as close.
Christopher Reeve became an advocate of spinal cord research, including looser restrictions on stem cell research, after a horse riding accident that left him a quadriplegic for the last nine years of his life.
Kerry knew the "Superman" actor for about 15 years through family and activist connections. Reeve left him a long telephone message the day before he died, thanking him for campaigning on behalf of medical research.
His death has since reverberated on the campaign trail, as Kerry battles President Bush (news - web sites) over the ethics of stem cell research using embryos destroyed for research. Bush restricted federally funded research to lines already existing before his 2001 executive order, a decision criticized by some scientists and research advocates.
Kerry's running mate, John Edwards (news - web sites), caused a stir earlier this month when he invoked the actor at a campaign event.
"If we do the work that we can do in this country, the work that we will do when John Kerry is president, people like Christopher Reeve will get up out of that wheelchair and walk again," Edwards said.
Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, a Tennessee Republican and doctor, accused Kerry and Edwards of "shamefully trying to use the death of people like Christopher Reeve to promote falsehoods and dishonesty" about Bush's position on stem cell research.

For what it's worth, notice that's an AP story. AP is another of those news organizations that has crossed the line from news to partisan cheerleading - though the average non-news-junkie doesn't know that yet. |

Irb111,
I think you're on to something - and all those hunting stories coming out today - now we know what Lurch is hunting.

Like some of the 9/11 survivors Reeve's widow has an agenda to oppose George W. Bush. Here in NJ even though Chrisite Whitman created and supported a program for spinal cord injury research (it's well known around the USA) Reeve's still had the audacity to attack Christie when the program was dedicated and he was honored as a guest. Christie made it clear to him that despite his bad mouthing her administration she was supporting spinal cord injury research. Christie showed class and Reeves backed off from the harsh rhetoric.
The RNC needs to make sure through advertisements that GWB has created research programs and supported medical research to include spinal cord injury. In fact during the Clinton years he had either decreased or provided no additional funding for medical research in the Department of Veterans Affairs, and it was only the congress that forced him to increase the level of funding. So here we have an example of a Democrat President not supporting medical research in the VA!!!

Guys, did anyone see the fox story in Columbus where they were standing outside in line waiting for Kerry. It was hilarious, even the reporter didn't mention it. There was a man with his back to the camera right behind the reporter with a Bush/Cheney 04 on the back of his shirt. He would move whenever the reporter would move. Then there was a Flipper 04 sign that kept getting covered up with a hat and then the walking "Flipper" mascot. It was great. Hope they show it again. |
