Michigan poll: Bush at 47 percent, Kerry 43 percent
10/20/2004, 11:39 p.m. ET
The Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) — A new poll of likely Michigan voters published Thursday showed 47 percent supporting President Bush and 43 percent backing U.S. Sen. John Kerry.

The telephone poll of 400 people conducted Monday and Tuesday by East Lansing-based pollster Steve Mitchell for The Detroit News, found 1 percent supporting independent Ralph Nader, 2 percent backing other candidates and 7 percent unsure or refusing to say.

The 4 percentage point difference between the support for Bush and Kerry is within the poll's 5-point margin of sampling error.

An Oct. 11-13 poll of 600 likely Michigan voters found 48 percent backing Democrat Kerry and 43 percent backing Republican Bush. The poll, conducted for The South Bend (Ind.) Tribune and WSBT-TV, had a 4 percentage point margin of error.

Two percent said they support independent Ralph Nader, and 7 percent were unsure.

Another recent poll, conducted Sept. 20-24 for the newsletter Inside Michigan Politics, showed 45 percent of 600 registered voters backing Kerry, 43 percent Bush, 1 percent Nader and 11 percent unsure. The poll had a 4-point error margin.

I live in Metro Detroit. This caught me totally by surprise. I had almost given up on my state...we haven't voted for a Republican Presidential candidate since George Sr. in 1988.

This summer we visited wife's relatives and made a 'grand tour' of Coldwater, up thru Battle Creek, Muskegon, Traverse City. Beautiful countryside. Compared to TN landscape, looked 'naturally conservative' territory to me.

However, there seemed a dearth of right-wing talk radio propaganda. Don't think we heard Rush on the car radio for the whole of MI. We were never out of range of left-wing PBS propaganda, however.

Political conversations overheard in little restaurants, seemed mostly pro-Kerry.

So where do the Michiganders get a balanced source of news/views?

Michigan's a tough state. Heavily AFL-CIO. I guess I'd have to chalk up this turn of events to the native intelligence of some Michiganders. My father was a staunch Republican. He thought for himself and knew the score. He was a student of history and taught me well. My mother, born in England, a natural socialist, was always on the side of the Democrats. Fortunately, she was not a citizen of the US and so could not vote lol! My one older sibling (brother) is a Democrat Sad Both my parents are gone to their rewards now, and I do miss them both but I trust Mom has since seen the light Smile

Actually, the most powerful and listened-to radio station in Detroit/MI - WJR carries Rush and Hannity's (taped delayed) shows. I don't know about the west side of the State. Left-wing/Liberals control the UAW/Automotive cities of Detroit, Flint, Saginaw, etc. , and college towns like Ann Arbor (University of Michigan). Republicans are in the large suburban areas around Detroit, rural areas (German Lutherans/Catholics), & the west side of state (conservative Dutch Reformed heritage). It didn't help the Republicans in Michigan when the Big Three Automakers agreed to allow UAW members to have national election days off in the last contract negotiations. The unions aren't as powerful as they once were, but still have tremendous clout in MI.

To be fair, it is difficult to peg what party old folks would be in, if they lived today.

Goldwater or Nixon would be way too liberal to be 'leaders' of today's Republican party. John Fitzgerald Kennedy would be way to conservative to be a 'leader' of today's Democrat party. All those guys would be somewhere in the 'mushy middle'.

Hate to say in 'McCain territory', because McCain seems to have found the middle by adopting the worst characteristics of both parties (GRIN).

I live in Michigan, in a more rural area northwest of
Detroit, (horse country).
Western and Northern Michigan tend to be more Republican,
as does the rural areas. However, the large population of Detroit and suburbs as well as other
large cities tend to vote Democratic.
A combination of the heavy black vote and the union
vote tends carry the State.

The two major newspapers are the Detroit News (leans Conservative)
and the Detroit Free Press (definitely Liberal). Their polls show Kerry
with the lead. Michigan is a BIG union state. We Bush supporters are working hard, and hoping
the Reagan Democrats will break with their unions and vote for Bush.
Never give up til the last vote is cast!

I would think this poll is far too out of line with the other Michigan polls. Don't think I will do any back flips yet.
If that poll was taken in Oakland county then maybe it would be close to being right
