The Debate Ron Kind Doesn't Want You To See

When Mediocre Congressmen Go Bad

After months of excuses and avoidance, Democratic Congressman Ron Kind finally agreed to a debate with his Republican Challanger Dale Schultz. The public event was held on Tuesday, October 19th at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse campus and sponsored by the Joint Legislative and Regents Relations Committee of the University. The announcement of the event said that the candidates "will debate issues in the important race and answer questions from the audience."

Being a Political Science student a member of the College Republicans, I naturally wanted to go. Generally when I go to debates or forums, I take notes. Since this was to be one of the precious few debates that Kind would participate in, I decided to bring a video camera.

I quickly learned that not only does Ron Kind have a chronic aversion to public debates, he seems particularily hostile to their being video recorded. Now, while I'm generally not the type to ruffle feathers, I take personal liberties and democracy very seriously, and I recognize impropriety when I see it. Ron Kind, a sitting congressman, and the moderator, my own Political Science professor, tried to make me give up my civil liberties because the congressman found it to be politically inconvenient.

I refused to turn my camera off, so Ron Kind refused to debate.

There's more... The links to the video are on the site.. they're really big files and I haven't braved the download yet myself. This is like.. the only debate this guy has agreed to, and then he won't debate because ONE kid has a video camera??? Grrrr...

Georgi
