Ever since I had to call Barnes & Noble for my copy of UFC (couple months ago) and go pick it up way in the back where a guy pulled it out from under the counter -- and in response to my query as to why the book was not "downstairs" with all the other new books was told that they weren't ordering it because they didn't think it would sell... I have been going into that store a couple times a week and reviewing all the tables at the front and no UFC. Even while it was a bestseller - no book. Moore, Franken, Kitty, etc, all stacked to the ceiling... And I would say, but.. it's on the best seller list, why don't you have it? We don't want a lot of copies of a book that will not sell... And so, in effect, the Barnes & Noble at Nicollet & 8th downtown Mpls. successfully banned UFC from the store.
Yesterday I called to see if they had a copy as I wanted another copy for a friend. The guy said he'd have to go & look for it and I told him not to bother as I'd been in the day before and the book was not out. Nevertheless, he was gone a long time and back on the phone said, yes, he had a copy and that there were many of them out on the table. I said since when? And he said, oh, we've had that book out on the tables for weeks now. This was too unbelievable. So I went over there on lunch and hunted for it -- and sure enough, there it was on the main floor, not ON the table, yet a few copies stacked on a shelf UNDER the table -- but you could see them if you stood back aways.
So now "safely" after the election they feel okay about putting out this "dangerous" book that they had to protect the public from -- that's bad enough, but also to lie and say it was there all the time!! (Too bad for them all their efforts on behalf of the dems were in vain.) |

Thank God for booksamillion.com - between amazon's egregious decision to allow "ad hominem attacks" in the reviews for UFC, (which they allow for NO other book, as far as I can tell) and Barnes & Noble's attempts to keep UFC out of sight, I'd be sunk without an alternate, well-stocked online source.
Between the DH and I, we spend a lot of money every month on books and magazines - he can go through a novel a day and I've been sucking up political books like there's no tomorrow.
It felt so good to write to them and tell them exactly why they'll see that there'll be no further use of our accounts or Reader's Advantage card. _________________ ~ Echo Juliet ~

You're right - I'm going to check out the above.
And I should not let this go down without a letter to B&N .. I'll give it a couple weeks to calm down so my pen can be reasonable and lethal. |

I will check out Barnes & Nobles too. I could not get it anywhere out here. It was like a dirty word. When I was finally able to get it from the library....I was on a waiting list.....when I went to pick it up the clerk had the gual to say to me, "Oh, poor guy. I guess they think he is unfit for command. He won't win cuz of them." I was so livid at the remark I had a hard time keeping quiet, so I just matter-of-factly said, " I don't feel sorry for him. He is unfit for command. He reaped what he sowed." I'm blessed she didn't throw the book at me cuz if looks could kill. |

When I bought my copy in August at at a local Barnes & Noble the third day after release, I had to ask for it. It also did not have the usual 20 or 30 % discount. The kid and the lady at the counter gave me dirty looks. I just smiled and made my purchase. I also immediately went to B&N website and e-mailed a compliant. I received a nice response from a CSR person offering to credit the balance. I agreed and was surprised when I got a gift card with $ line that more than made up for it. A couple weeks later the displays at that particular store were rearranged and new books of all sorts were prominent. As the gal said in the e-mail , they are in business to sell books. (I thanked them.) Bottom line, if they are giving you a line of BS, push it up the line where the decision makers are. Best book deal I ever got. Thanks, Swiftees. _________________ 8th Army Korea 68-69 |
