Posted at VVAW website upcoming events:
VVAW: "JAZZ FUNERAL FOR DEMOCRACY"
When: January 20, 2005 from 10am-2pm
Where: Congo Square (aka “Louis Armstrong Park”)
What: Traditional Jazz Funeral, in which we will bury the USA Patriot Act and Bill of Rights in New Orleans.
Sponsored by: CAWI, C3,Pax Christi, VFP, VVAW, Bienville House and many more...
The March:
The march will begin promptly @ 11:00 AM from Congo Square (aka "Louis Armstrong Park") on Rampart Street across from the French Quarter. Please be there no later than 10:00 AM (committee members by 9:00AM). We will proceed down Rampart to Canal Street and head towards the river. At Decatur Street, we will turn south and pause at the Moon Walk for a brief rally with music and speakers. It is there that some kind of gesture in keeping with both traditional New Orleans jazz funerals and the political agenda will be accomplished.
At that moment, the mourning phase will conclude and the second line will commence. We will second line down the rest of Decatur Street, turn briefly onto Esplanade before heading down Frenchman Street to Washington Square Park where we will further celebrate with our own version of an inaugural ball. We hope to have live music and adult refreshments awaiting our arrival.
Map of the Quarter.
The costs of the city permit will be paid by a friend of the event.

The symbolism of their protest theater action is not clear to me. Burying the Patriot Act and the Bill of Rights -- what is their statement? A "funeral for democracy" -- because they didn't get their way. Because the Act allows us to fight terrorism & is therefore a threat to our security? Because the Bill of Rights has now been destroyed because they didn't get the president they wanted? How dramatic. This is America -- the majority rules. It might make more sense for the better future of America if they would bury their cause.......

Their next event listed for 3/13/04 is the: "Milwaukee Beer Festival":
"Breweries bring their Bock and specialty beers for tasting. A priest blesses the beer. Then we drink it."
Doesn't look like the death of democracy has dampened their spirits much....
