It is late and I am tired, but if I remember right Jefferson never said that quote at least in terms of our republic. I have read a ton on Jefferson and cannot place it in terms of anything he said regarding the republic and its health. I have a feeling she is quoting one of Jeffersons obscure letters he wrote amongst friends which was not in the 'Babs' context.
