“The Tocqueville Connection”: FRANCE FINDS BUSH VICTORY HARD TO SWALLOW (Received Thursday, 4 November 2004 13:15:00 GMT) Quote: | PARIS, Nov 4 (AFP) - While French officialdom and media are playing it straight over US President George W. Bush's re-election, the public is making its stupefaction known through cafe criticism and acerbic blogs. Overwhelmingly, the opinions expressed were ones of dismay that Bush would be in power for another four years, with many predicting worsening transatlantic relations, particularly for France. Anti-American feelings were also running high with the realisation that the majority of US voters backed Bush. "It was all a manipulation," a young waiter, who gave his first name as Matthieu, said Thursday as he tended tables in a city cafe. Around him, and in other cafes and restaurants, the French seethed as they took in the news. Conversations were liberally sprinkled with insults as to the intelligence of Bush and the US electorate..... |
**ARTICLE**
Course, this is coming from Paris and one wonders if Paris speaks for all of France... Left is left, no matter where, I guess. I think it would be interesting to see what papers in the countryside have to say, but I couldn't find any in English... |

Tocqueville wouldn't recognise any of these weezils.
Ooh, Bush est le presidente USA? C'est la tuff sh*t, mon smelli ami.
Bwwhhaahaaahaahaaaa! Evertime I think of the Euro appeasement weasels dealing with W I start grinning all over again.
You know why Euro-Disney is such a flop? Disney could never get the idea of customer service through to the French employees...bwwahhahhaha...

I'd be very careful of drawing conclusions from these kinds of "journals" about the mood of the whole population. I'd guess that Franco-American sites like this one probably draw a fair share of American apologizers from this side of the pond.
My son-in-law was actually in London early last week during the election. He came back amazed that he didn't run into anyone who was not for Bush. He said that people who he talked to (mainly business people) admired Bush's fortitude and courage ("spine"), and didn't like Blair because they thought Blair had none. That, of course, if very different from the views of the British press we saw.
Moral of the story: everything might not be as it seems in the press. |

Please remember that America continues to be appreciated by the Frenchmen in Normandy, reminded daily by the graves of American dead sacrifed to free France from Nazi Germany. |

Yes - we've got a bond with Normandy, and I'll bet with other areas as well. We can only hope that the anti-American elements that have such a loud voice over there right now do not, over time, deprive their children of the knowledge of that history. |

A couple of friends of mine, who have been to France, outside of Paris, say that the attitudes outside of Paris are very different from those in Paris...
Gee, like Chicago and the rest of Ill, like NYC and the rest of NY, big city folks are liberal, others are not... |

If the Euroweasels in Paris found a Bush victory hard to swallow, just wait until they taste the big ole turdburger they'll have to eat over the next four years when they're summarily ignored on every issue of importance.
Would you like some fries with that frogs??? |

While stationed in Germany (Ramstein AB) in the mid 70's, I traveled by car to Paris. Until we got into the city the folks were very gracious, but in Paris it was very snobby. I think that they have a similar situation to us where all the libs pool together in one spot and act like they talk for everyone.
And we all know they had to add the 8th dwarf for the French - you know Snotty _________________ "The most terrifying words in the English language are: I'm from the government and I’m here to help." Ronald Reagan |

WWIIVetsdaugher and GIaunt,
I appreciate you all saying that. Several months ago I posted on here about my recent visit to Normandy and how well the Americans were treated. There are American Flags everywhere, besides the flags of the coalition who helped free France. Even Germany's flag is with them.
When I posted about this, I was attacked by member's of this board because I defended Normandy and areas of France that are not as liberal as people think. They go by what the press says, not what the people say.
I've been all over Europe and Normandy BY FAR is the greatest place I've ever been. If anyone ever gets the chance to go, please do. I recommend you read up on the invasion of Normandy first (read the books by Stephen Ambrose...especially Pegagus Bridge, also watch the Longest Day before you go). If you don't know the history of the different battles fought you will have no understanding. There are no tour guides. You're on your own and it's awesome. Not only that, when you drive around the country side, you feel you are in a Thomas Kinkade painting. |

France has a nightmare looming on it's horizon, the growing Muslim community in France. The movie star, Brigitte Bardot, even wrote a book about it and got fined for inciting racial hatred.

So some French people know what's ahead for them but they get criticized and fined while the other choose to bury their heads in the sand. |

If I were a citizen of France I'd be more concerned about the failures of French policy than about George Bush. The French have failed in their attempts to obstruct the Americans and have endangered their most important alliance over their false pride and the clear financial interest of a few French companies and politicians in Saddam Hussein. How do you spell "soul searching" in French? |

I don't dislike all French, only the ones who make the present government policies. They are like the Vichy in WW2, Collaborators with our enemys.
France is by no means a monoculture regardless of what some may tell you. Regional differences in language, culture, custom and history can be as stark as night and day in some instances. The Brenton coast is a good example of what I'm talking about. The folks there have a proud Celtic heritage of their own and many don't even recognize the French language as their own. They've had no end to trouble with the government because they want their own language recognized in the public schools. Their plight is like that of the Welsh and the folk down in Cornwall who are tired of all this melting pot nonsense that the government keeps trying to foist off on folks. _________________ Hey swifty, I'm with you, Just watch you don't get "Kerry'd away in the propwash

Unfortunately I am of French heritage and now I hang my head in shame.
I do want to clear up one thing though, all the French girls I knew when I was growing up would swallow anything. So I can only assume the story was in error. The French do swallow. _________________ Retired AF E-8

I think that we should treat the French People as we would want to be treated. Give them the benifit of the doubt. All of the people can't be held responsible for the idiocy of the Chirac government. _________________ Hey swifty, I'm with you, Just watch you don't get "Kerry'd away in the propwash
