				The War's Last Battle

Bess Robinson

The poem that follows was written about Larry Robinson by his mother. Larry was shot down over Laos on

January 5, 1970. Bess, his mother, wrote this tribute to her son one year to the day that her son was shot

down. The purpose is to get you thinking of all the suffering that has been done by those who survive here

at home.

A TRIBUTE TO LARRY

A tribute to our Larry

Who, one year ago today

Was shot down over Laos

So many miles away.

THE PRICE OF A MARINE

The requirements of a good Marine

Are boundless I am told

They must be very strong of heart

Courageous and so bold.

They are taught the modern methods

Of survival under fire

Stamina and strength are skills

They must and do require.

Our lad so ambitious

At the age of seventeen

Chose his selection

The life of a Marine.

He trained with skill an sureness

And then this twist of fate

They shipped him to that country, twice

A burning pit of hate.

We eagerly awaited

The mailman everyday

For a letter in his writing

"Hello folks, I'm Okay."

January 8, the telephone brought it--

That message we all dread

A chaplain informed us

Our loved Larry was dead.

His plane was down, it burned

He said, "No body will there be."

Lord! Why did this happen?

It's more than I can see.

In our hearts he'll remain forever

This Larry that we love

But we hope he smiles upon us

From his heavenly home above.

Years might erase the torment

Of our hearts that writhe in paid

But we'll always ask this question

Lord, was it all in vain?

When we take a look around us

View the hatred and the strife

Was it really necessary

The he gave up his life?

Maybe, if each would make an effort

His own life to refine

t would ease the loss within me

Of the Marine flier of mine.

Larry and I served together in VMFA-312 in Beaufort. He was the finest pilot I ever flew with (sorry, Prince Hal). I can still see him at Happy Hour, smoking his cigar and regaling us with his unending suppy of flying tales. He wanted to be a US Senator from Nebraska when he finished serving with the Marines. He surely reached out and touched the face of God. _________________ Former "War Criminal" |

What a beautiful Tribute. I am sure this brings back memories that are painful. You have my sympathy. It must be hard sometimes to remember, and from my own personal loss, although after time it may not sting as much, somehow the pain never really goes away. God bless you. |
