Aside from being born and a lifetime of fabulous self-promotion I believe the one thing that did most to invigorate opposition, raise hackles, summon hoots of derision and stir indignation especially among otherwise dis-interested vets was.....

That wimpy, disrespectful salute, "Reporting for duty."

And, anyone who refered to it as 'smart', 'snappy', or 'military' was instantly identified as the enemy, ignorant and partisan.

That salute was straight out of a performance by the Village People.

If anyone is interested there was what I thought to be an interesting exchange on this topic in Mid-October in Gedunk.

"Reporting for duty" my butt. It makes my blood boil every time I think about his disingenuous remark.

C'mon guys..... That was his best attempt at being a professional hero. After all, he only had 4 months to learn it.....

He has had 20 years to report for US Senate duty and has been AWOL most of the time. That may call for a different salute with fewer digits.
