White House Denounces Racism Toward Rice
By Jeff Gannon

WASHINGTON (Talon News) -- The White House spoke out Monday against the criticism of Secretary of State nominee Dr. Condoleezza Rice. Since her nomination to become the highest-ranking African-American woman in American history, fourth in line to the presidency, Rice has been the subject of racially charged caricatures and extreme rhetoric.

A Wisconsin radio talk show host, John Sylvester, the program director and morning personality on WTDY-AM in Madison, referred to Rice as "Aunt Jemima" during a broadcast. He told the Associated Press that he used the term to describe Rice and other blacks as having only a subservient role in the Bush administration.

Caricatures of Rice that have appeared recently in the Washington Post and New York Times portray her as a black stereotype. The Washington Post published a Pat Oliphant cartoon that shows her drawn as a parrot with thick protruding lips and buck teeth, repeating President Bush's words back to him.

Gary Trudeau, who draws the "Doonesbury" comic strip features President Bush referring to Rice with the nickname "Brown Sugar."

Members of the black leadership network Project 21 issued a statement condemning the political cartoons that they consider racist as well as liberal groups that are usually outspoken on racial matters.

Mychal Massie said, "The recent racist attacks and mimicry of Condoleezza Rice are infuriating and despicable. Even more insufferable is the deafening silence of the elite liberals."

Michael King, another Project 21 member, said, "To hear the leftists tell it, conservative blacks have become the new 'trash class' of American society. And with the continued cricket-filled silence from the professional civil rights crowd, the Jesse Jacksons and Al Sharptons give tacit permission and acceptance of such language and tactics."

While not all of the objectionable comments have been racially motivated, they have been no less vitriolic. Newsmax.com reported the comments of White House reporter Helen Thomas who recently called Rice "a monster."

According to Newsmax.com, Thomas, whose career as a White House correspondent stretches back to the Kennedy administration, also said, "That lady is a g*ddamn liar."

White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan commented to Talon News about the cartoons and statements, saying, "What you refer to is totally inappropriate."

God bless America.
