MINNESOTA: One down!
OK - we're still stuck with him until 2006 -- but this is GOOD NEWS. I had anticipated SQUASH DAYTON was going to be on my agenda and now that won't be necessary. I've listened to this nasty little enraged man on Committees over the last year and could barely stand any more -- what a relief it will be to have him OUT!

While the Democrats undoubtedly can field a better candidate, it isn't obvious to me that they can find a candidate sufficiently better than Dayton to cancel out the loss of incumbency.
UPDATE: … Dayton's withdrawal may have been related to difficulty raising money. That's a little mysterious, given what I understand to be Dayton's vast wealth, but I have heard him say that he did not want to spend his own money this time. "Difficulty raising money" could be, of course, a euphemism for "his party wanted him out." |

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Sen. Mark Dayton, D-Minn., said today that he will not run for re-election in 2006. Dayton made the announcement this afternoon in a telephone conference call with reporters. "I do not believe that I am the best candidate to lead the DFL Party to victory next year,'' Dayton said. The senator made a brief statement and took no questions. He called it ''a tremendous honor to serve Minnesota in the past four years.’’ He said he wanted to keep the seat in Democratic hands and said he cannot do the necessary fundraising to run an effective campaign. Dayton also said he is withdrawing his support from Mayor Randy Kelly’s re-election committee. (B. note: St. Paul Mayor Randy Kelly, is a Democrat who endorsed President Bush in last year's election.)
On Tuesday, Kelly had announced that Dayton was supporting his re-election bid.
Dayton, a freshman facing a tough 2006 re-election fight, made the decision days after a Star Tribune Minnesota Poll showed his approval rating had plummeted to 43 percent and amid mounting concerns about his political viability. Republicans had already made the freshman Democrat their top target for ouster in next year's election. One source said Dayton told his staff in Minnesota and Washington of his decision shortly before noon today.
Dayton, a department store heir who tapped $12 million from his own fortune to finance his 2000 campaign, also faced a fundraising hurdle. He has said he would be unable to finance the 2006 campaign on his own, and would seek private donations, but had only about $177,000 in his campaign account at year’s end. He has said his campaign likely would need $15 million or more.
Dayton’s popularity began to sink after he made a controversial decision last fall to temporarily close his Senate office for several weeks during Congress’ pre-election recess out of fear of a terrorist attack. Heaped with ridicule by Republicans, Dayton defended his decision, which was based on a review of a classified CIA report about a doomsday scenario on Capitol Hill.
His decision to pull out nearly two years before the election would open the door for other Democrats with Senate aspirations to enter a race in which several Republicans have expressed interest in running. Republican Reps. Mark Kennedy and Gil Gutknecht, as well as former senator Rod Grams -- the man Dayton ousted in 2000 -- have all expressed interest in Dayton’s Senate seat. One senior Democrat in Washington said Dayton’s decision "doesn’t surprise me." "It’s an uphill climb for him," this individual said. "He has become somewhat of a target for the Republicans." |

| I have to disagree with you that this is good news. In 2006, any Republican could beat Dayton, now the Dems have a chance to field a better candidate and possibly win. |

My thoughts exactly. What would have been a sure pick up for
Republicans is now doubtful. |

Geez, you guys took away my happy moment..
Yes, I realize it gives the dems a better chance, but the deed is done and I was just so darn glad to see him go. |

Sorry about that. I am also very happy to see him go, he is such an embarrassment. You wouldnt think that there could be such a moron in the U.S. Senate, but then you look at Massachusetts and they have two! |

Yes but the democrats have forfeited the benefit of running an incumbent. And if it wasn't for Hennepin and Ramsey counties Minnesota would be a red state.
Now if we could just find a way to unseat Russ Feingold hear in WI. We will have to wait a while since he was just reelected this past November.

Every time I see someone mention Al Franken and use the term comedian I cringe. I grew up watching SNL and the weekly disapointmant was Franken and Davis, or Franken at all. Shouldn't a comedian at least be funny once in a while??? So he was a comedian that nobody laughed at and now is a radio host that nobody listens too. Next he wants to be a politicain that nobody votes for????
Sorry, but this scares me. Someone who consistently fails at every endeavor is just what the domocrats in Minnesota are all about. We had Wellstone who lied about everything, Dayton who runs when scared and next we may have Al Franken??? Our one shiny light in MN is Norm Coleman.
Save us from the liberals in Minnesota.
PS I know I did not mention his 'Honorable' Jesse 'the Mindless' Ventura. He is too busy now growing weeds on his face, and still screaming out loud 'The media was mean to me, The media was mean to me'. |
