Congress should pass a law, or at least its strongest resolution, requiring that all candidates for high office authorize the release of their complete military records to the public, including but not limited to, Congress, the Federal Judiciary, President and Vice President. If it is legal, then they should also demand that all elected officer holders in the 50 states should do likewise. To hide records of one's past should be deemed unethical.
The public should never have to deal again with a John Kerry, nor should organizations like the Swift Boat Veterans be slandered for simply demanding truth in campaigns, in Kerry's case that he authorize public access to his military records. The above would have the effect of requiring him, and all Congressional candidates, to campaign honestly when running for reelection.
It is assumed that candidates for appointed offices have no choice in the matter, that in the normal course of the investigation of their character the appropriate Senate commitees or other appointing body will demand full knowledge of their military records.
We should never again give Kerry or any other candidate of questionable background another free ride. Kerry should be required as a matter of course to open his military records to the public, or decline to run for reelection. It goes without saying that doing so would simultaneously insure Kerry's defeat in any election, for the Senate or another run for the Presidency, and finally vindicate the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. Hopefully, such a law or strong Congressional resolution would rid the nation of Kerry and others of similar questionable character once and for all.
I still consider the slander of the Swift Boat Veterans a great scandal as well as the low point of media partisanship during the 2004 Presidential campaign. And the slander continues--including on FOX news.

Well said, CT! and welcome to the forum.
It's only logical that if an employer can request a Vet show proof of
an Honorable Discharge before hiring, that we, the American electorate
should demand the same requirement. _________________ “I love the man that can smile in trouble, that can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection. ‘Tis the business of little minds to shrink; but he whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves his conduct, will pursue his principles unto death.” (Thomas Paine, 1776) |
