Well as I write this we have moving boxes all around the house. After 30 yrs in LA I've seen this place go from a nice town to a poster child for what the liberals see as a great place to live. The area is overrun by illegal aliens. Traffic is a nightmare, the educators teach their own flavor of history and the politically correct crowd rules the day. Taxes continue to rise, gas (because of something they add to the fuel) is close to $2.50 a gallon, emergency wards are pretty much out of bussiness because the illegals use it for free health care. The quality of life pretty much is in the sh*tter. I've got 3 more weeks to do and I've put my 30 yrs in and have a nice retirement. (City of LA). Moving to NE of Atlanta, not in the boonies but close, (at least when I chew tobacco now I'll have company). Wink

Good luck on your move and future.
Just be careful you do not overshoot your target in a southern direction and end up in another nutcase State

Hey! Welcome to the club. I burned out on California almost 30 years
ago. I took a twilight cruise to Navy Recruiting District Peoria and
retired from there when they went out of business. I've been here
ever since and of late, flatly refuse to so much as put a tire into that
cesspool. Even so they tried to tax my Navy retirement pay as they
rationalized that I was stationed in California so they were the "source"
state. I just put them on ignore.

Congrats on your upcoming retirement and best of luck in whatever the future holds for you and your family! A few decades ago I lived in Norcross; Gwinnett County sure is a beautiful area.

If you happen to come through El Paso on your way to Georgia give me a call ahead of time and I'll buy you dinner.

The situation you describe in LA is almost identical to what El Paso is facing. Everything seems to be going in the crapper and it's mostly due to the flood of illegal aliens that are putting a horrendous strain on city and county infrastructure. Every day you can drive by any of our public schools and see parents with Mexico license plates picking up their kids (El Paso is across the Rio Grande from Juarez, Mexico). The Mexicans don't pay U.S. taxes of any sort and yet they take advantage of every service that our country has to offer. I'm Hispanic (4th generation U.S. citizen) and it pisses me off to no end to see this happening day in and day out. Oh well, enough ranting........

I've been thinking about selling my business and retiring myself but I know that I'd drive my wife nuts! We own some property out in Southern New Mexico and hopefully one of these days we'll build a house there. I'll lay some concertina wire around the perimeter, set up trip flares and fugas and determine my fields of fire!

Best of luck to you, leatherneck.

I guess I'll be stuck for the rest of my life in the B(g)ay Area... and yet, I have to consider that two-thirds or so of California's counties are RED.

I spend alot of time in those red counties, and it is ... ah... refreshing.

Good Luck, wherever you go.

Thanks guys, I'll be online for awhile longer, we have the mover scheduled for the 29th which is my last day of work...(I feel like a short timer with a flight date).

Gocars, I'm not sure where 10 takes me but I think I'm gonna drive out 10 till I get past Texas. Being a grunt and all I'll check the map when I get in the car. We are moving to Gwinnett County, gonna rent till we find a house. ps I'm sure my wife is getting nervous also, I hope she bought that for better or worst part. hehe.

Dadesid, I don't know how you do it I'd go postal living around San Francisco. Been there a few times and was always glad to leave.

Snipe, I can only say I stuck around for the bikinis. Now I'm like an old fixed alley cat and might as well move. Wink

Roger, yea I've been watching Fox news lately I agree.

8 hours of driving 10 out of LA lands you in Phoenix.

Get in touch!

Mis-spent 5 years in LA but had to join the Navy to learn the real LA was Lower Alabama.

I got to drive through Atlanta last February on my way to Fort Benning
to see #3 Son-in-Law graduate from Basic Infantry Training. I got to
break out the summer clothes, at least for a couple of days. Then back
up to winter in Peoria. Nice weather in Georgia in the winter time.

Last Tuesday, the movers came by and loaded up their stuff and headed
off for Fort Carson, Colorado. The kids moved into housing there last
weekend. So this Sunday, they can get all their stuff and settle in. I'm
just glad that I'm over the moving around thing. Watching those movers
loading up the van just made me tired. I mean I love work, I can sit
around and watch it being done for hours, but moving is just plain tireing.

IB Squidly is correct: 8 hours of driving east from LA will land you in Phoenix.

FYI from Phoenix to El Paso is 350 miles and from El Paso to the Texas/Louisiana state line via I-10 is roughly 760 miles.

Stay in touch!

Smart move Leather and if your in Kentucky look me up for a chew or two. As a native Californian I've seen the state go to hell over the last 35 yrs. There are still some conservative and growing areas in the north and central California,i.e.; Grass Valley,Sacramento,Eureka but these will be fully appreciated soon.
As a 25 year real estate investor the baby boooooooooomers will blooooooow this wide open in the next few years. It's already started and over the next 15 years there will be mass movement out of these fully appreciated states in the west and north east corridor. I spoke with one of my R.E. developer friends yesterday and he cannot find enough land to build patio homes fast enough here in Kentucky.
Growth rate here is a paltry .5-2% go figure. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Hey,if you don't mind having a chew with a swab jockey I'll buy. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Hey, if you're buying I'm in. Cool
(I agree with that, baby boomers are starting to retire, and I don't think to many are gonna stay in Calif). Only thing holding back the flood gates of taxes at the moment is the Terminator, I expect he'll get fed up with the liberal CS'ers and not run for another term. LA will more than likely have a liberal mexican elected this July and his aligance isn't to the US...

My message to the few left in Calif, is last one out bring the flag.

Let it go down the tubes with annexing and nationalizing by Mexico. Won't be long before a foreign power(Korea,China,Muslims) will be fighting Mexicans for control of the state.

Now,who will the Mexicans call when help is needed?
You got it Leather Neck the US NAVY

Well, don't forget about those RED counties in California. There are 58 counties, and 38 of them are RED. Those 38 have most of the agriculture, most of the guns, and ALL of the water.

The BLUE counties can make their own flag. Crossed condoms... with the "reservoir" ends pointing down, of course.

What a hoot it would be!

lthrneck, you have undoubtably checked the map yourself, so I wouldn't presume to advise you on your route, .....hell, you may have a reason for detouring down south through San Antone and Houston, but, seems to me that a much straighter shot from LA to Atlanta would be to take 10 to VanHorne in west Texas then 20 the rest of the way. Interstate all the way and a shorter distance thru DFW, Shreveport, Jackson, and Birmingham.
