More antics from the busy senator:
Quote: | “Kerry invades R.I. turf,” By Boston Herald editorial staff - 4/13/05
(emphasis added)
The U.S. Senate used to be such a clubby, well-mannered place where battles could get heated but certain gentlemanly rules of engagement applied. Those have been slowly eroding in recent years and now Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) has done what would have been unthinkable not so long ago. He is using some leftover campaign cash to take a direct shot at Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee on Chafee's home turf - our neighboring state of Rhode Island.
Kerry's political campaign committee has ponied up $20,000 to take out some Web-based ads on several newspaper sites targeted to Rhode Island Internet users, calling on Chafee to oppose the nomination of John Bolton to be U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.
“Rhode Island needs a senator who will always vote with the people of Rhode Island's interests in mind - even when that means standing tall in the face of withering pressure from the right-wing Republican establishment,”' Kerry said in the ads that ran this week. “Call on Senator Chafee to take a stand on principle,” he urges Rhode Island voters.
Kerry and Chafee are both members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee where a party-line vote on the Bolton nomination would send it out of committee by a slim 10-8 margin. One switch and a tie could kill it, and Chafee had threatened to do just that. During Monday's hearing however, Chafee told Bolton, “You said all the rights things in your opening statement.” If ever there was any doubt, the dirty slapshot of the Kerry ad ought to clinch Chafee's vote for Bolton. |
And a LETTER TO THE EDITOR about this article:
Quote: | “Kerry bashing,” By Ann Riley - 4/13/05
(emphasis added/ but spelling left as is)
I?m amazed that the Boston Herald is still recreationally bashing Senator Kerry. Your staff never misses an opportunity to snipe at John Kerry. The editorial entitled, 'Kerry invades R.I. turf' is utter nonsense. Times are tough and they are getting tougher, yet your paper bemoans the lack of 'certain gentlemanly rules of engagement' on the part of Senators, as commentary on John Kerry?s ad urging Senator Chafee to vote against the Bolton conformation. As a voter and a concerned American, gentlemanly rules are the last think I?m worried about. Kerry is in the Senate working and fighting with more fervor than he?s ever shown. In the past, the Herald has accused Kerry of not having enough fire. Now, apparently you feel that he has too much. There is a 'dirty slapshot' in evidence here, but it isn?t coming from Senator Kerry. It is coming from your editorial staff... yet again. |
I don’t know what Kerry’s plea of “taking a stand on principle” (against Republican “withering pressure”) has to do with selecting the best person for the job as ambassador to the worrisome UN…..
