or - too much pressure on me
Quote: | *UPDATE* - TERRIFIC NEWS!!!! New information into Move America Forward officials confirms that Senator Voinovich is taking a 'new' and 'fair' look at John Bolton - the man President Bush has nominated to serve as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. We are confident Senator Voinovich will vote 'YES' to allow Mr. Bolton's nomination to proceed from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. MAF's principals are not at liberty to disclose who they've heard from and specifically what was said - under promise of confidentiality - but the organization is now confident that John Bolton's nomination will make it to the floor for a vote by the full U.S. Senate. |

MAF Suspends Anti-Voinovich Ad Campaign – Confident the Ohio Republican
Has a ‘New Outlook’ on Bolton Nomination
(SACRAMENTO) – The organization strongly backing the nomination of John Bolton to serve as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Move America Forward (website: www.MoveAmericaForward.org), has indefinitely suspended its radio ad campaign that had targeted Senator George Voinovich (R-Ohio). The final ads will be broadcast today – Monday, April 25, 2005.
“We’ve received reassurances from very reliable sources that Senator Voinovich has obtained a new and fair outlook on the Bolton nomination. At this point in time we believe John Bolton’s nomination will progress from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and Mr. Bolton will be able to receive an up or down vote from the full U.S. Senate – which is the way it should be,” said Howard Kaloogian, Co-Chairman of Move America Forward.
Move America Forward has spent tens of thousands of dollars airing radio ads throughout the state of Ohio on more than one-dozen news/talk radio stations. The ad campaign began Thursday, April 21st.
In addition, the organization activated its 200,000+ members and supporters to communicate their views on the Bolton nomination with Senator Voinovich’s office.
According to media reports and sources on Capitol Hill, Senator Voinovich’s office was inundated with phone calls, FAXes and emails.
Within a couple of hours of Voinovich’s action Tuesday, Move America Forward announced on its Web site and in faxes to news organizations that it would target Voinovich for his “obstructionist conduct.” On Thursday, the day the ads began running, Voinovich’s office phones were jammed with callers and computer e-mail in-baskets were clogged with messages related to the Bolton confirmation. It was no better Friday.
“The telephone lines are consistently busy,” said Voinovich spokeswoman Marcie Ridgway. “And we’re getting lots of e-mails because they posted our e-mail addresses on their Web site.”

The reason for such a strong reaction from the American public stems from the conduct of Senate Democrats who are being obstructionist.
“This ‘Stop Bolton’ campaign has been orchestrated by the same people who lost the last presidential election campaign. It’s based not on John Bolton’s qualifications or track record, which are exemplary, but instead on a smear campaign the likes of which haven’t been seen since Clarence Thomas, Anita Hill and the pubic hair on a Coke can,” Kaloogian said.
“The Senators on the Foreign Relations Committee are supposed to be looking out for the interests of the American people. Polls have made it very clear that the public wants to see a dramatic change in how the United Nations conducts itself. The UN has its lowest approval ratings in the history of the organization and John Bolton is exactly the kind of strong, pro-American ambassador we need to take on the corruption and anti-Americanism that is becoming a dominant presence at the UN.
“Senators John Kerry and Barbara Boxer weren’t looking out for the American people’s interests or trying to advance UN reforms when they began their campaign to smear John Bolton. They were shamelessly trying to score political points against President Bush, and its imperative that all Senators, Republican and Democrat alike, reject the dirty tactics of Senators Boxer, Kerry and Biden,” Kaloogian said.
Move America Forward’s other Co-Chair, Melanie Morgan, is in Washington, D.C. this week (attending the “Hold Their Feet to the Fire” immigration reform rally) and announced that Move America Forward board members will decide within the next 48 hours whether to commence an effort to persuade Democrat Senators Russ Feingold (D-Wisconsin) and Bill Nelson (D-Florida) into voting for Bolton.
“I don’t think the Democrat Senators on Capitol Hill realized how badly the American public wants to see someone who will speak up for American interests at the UN. The personal smear tactics of Barbara Boxer and John Kerry are backfiring on them and we are determined to make sure the people of this nation see exactly what kind of deplorable conduct these Senators have engaged in,” Morgan said.
“In the 2004 elections voters were presented with a candidate who argued for a ‘global test’ to determine American foreign policy decisions. That approach was mocked by the public and rejected by the voters and it is rejected by John Bolton. I find it hard to believe that some of these Senators could be naďve enough to try and recycle this failed idea now as it relates to how we approach the United Nations. I am hopeful that Senator’s Nelson and Feingold will come to their senses,” Morgan concluded. |
