Not all of Barber's claims were profit-making ploys. Barber liked to boast of his exploits as a Vietnam War helicopter pilot and medic who crashed in Laos and was taken prisoner, said Mary Schantag, who does fraud investigations for the nonprofit P.O.W. Network.
The claims fell apart in 2001, after he was named Kansas City chapter president of the motorcycle group Rolling Thunder, and his buddies started questioning his tales, Schantag said.
"He claimed he lost a leg," Schantag said. "If you never take your pants off or you never wear shorts, how is anyone going to know? You can fake a limp."
Actually, Barber had served time in Fort Leavenworth after deserting in 1970 and 1971, Schantag said.
"The guy's a total fraud," Schantag said. "He ought to be in prison." |
