BALTIMORE, Maryland (AP) -- A social activist and perennial political candidate was stabbed multiple times in an attack at his home Monday afternoon, police said.
A. Robert Kaufman, 74, a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate, was in critical condition, a hospital spokeswoman said Monday night.
Investigators believe the attack stemmed from a landlord-tenant dispute.
"We don't have any suspects in custody, but we do have good leads," said Officer Troy Harris, a police spokesman.
Kaufman rents out several rooms in his home and owns a few nearby buildings with tenants, said Michael Melick, a member of the City Wide Coalition, Kaufman's activist organization.
Kaufman one of three declared candidates in the Democratic primary for the seat being vacated by Sen. Paul Sarbanes, who is retiring. He has run previously for Congress, governor and mayor of Baltimore. |
