Vietnamese Prime Minister Phan Van Khai, leader of one of the world's last communist states, rang the opening bell yesterday in one of the institutional hearts of capitalism, the New York Stock Exchange. Mr Khai, the first Vietnamese government leader to visit the United States since the end of the Vietnam war, stood on the balcony above the trading floor, flanked by the exchange's chief executive officer, John Thain, and the Vietnamese deputy prime minister and finance minister.
As Mr Khai sounded the bell for the 9.30am start of business, several traders turned to the balcony, cheering and applauding as he waved back.
"I guess it means we won after all," one trader joked afterwards about Mr Khai's visit. The prime minister was then given a whirlwind walkabout of the trading floor.
