This will ruin your dinner! In Loudon County, VA, this group called Project Hope and Harmony are trying to get 175-200K approved (taxpayers dollars) to build a place for day laborers to hang out when waiting for work. Almost all Day Laborers are illegal aliens.

Watchdog Puts Herndon Planning Commission on Legal Notice Over Citizens' Objections to Proposed "Day Laborer" Site

Letter Details Proposal's Planned Violations of Law & Illegal Use of Taxpayer's Funds for Illegal Aliens

(Washington, DC / Herndon, VA) Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, said today that it has provided legal notice to the Town of Herndon Planning Commission detailing Herndon citizens' objections to a proposed "Day Laborer" site. The Town of Herndon is currently considering committing public resources to facilitate criminal activity by illegal aliens. Judicial Watch represents concerned residents and taxpayers of the Town of Herndon and Fairfax County in this matter. Copies of the letter were sent to the Herndon Town Council, as well as Fairfax and Loudon County officials.

The Town of Herndon Planning Commission is considering an application by an organization representing itself as "Project Hope and Harmony" for a conditional use permit for a "Day Laborer" site to be situated on Town of Herndon property. A public hearing at the Town of Herndon Council Chambers is scheduled for Monday, August 1, 2005 at 7:30PM.
Judicial Watch's clients' concerns are numerous, but center on the use of taxpayer resources, including town property and county funds, to facilitate illegal activity. An official Fairfax County study concluded that 85% of "day laborers" lacked legal documentation permitting lawful employment. The proposal before the Town of Herndon entails committing public funds and resources to facilitate the illegal employment of undocumented aliens - a crime. Federal immigration laws make it illegal to "encourage or induce an alien come to, enter, or reside in the United States, knowing or in reckless disregard of the fact that such coming to, entry, or residence is or will be in violation of law." 8 U.S.C. § 1324(a)(1)(A)(iv). Federal immigration laws also make it unlawful to aid or abet the commission of such acts. 8 U.S.C. § 1324(a)(1)(A)(v)(II).

Should the proposal go forward, Judicial Watch and its clients are prepared to challenge the "Day Laborer Site" in court as an illegal use of taxpayer funds and will seek declaratory and injunctive relief, attorney's fees, costs, and any other relief to which they are entitled.

"Public officials cannot commit taxpayer's funds and public resources in furtherance of a crime - no matter how well-intentioned," stated Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. "Any attempt by Herndon or Fairfax officials to aid and abet criminal conduct with taxpayer money will be met with swift, strong legal action on the part of Judicial Watch and our clients," Fitton added.

A copy of Judicial Watch's letter to the Herndon Planning Commission is available on the Internet here.
