I learned this morning that one of our forum's stalwarts M1917A1 died suddenly early this morning.
M1917A1 served in ASA during Vietnam and did a tour of duty in Japan supporting in-country opeations.
2nd Ammendment Sis, another of this forum's fire-breathing stalwarts was his wife.
To the end M1917A1 was a genuine patriot, an NRA Life Member, a man of honor, a good family man, and a loyal friend. He lived well and died a clean death.
Though I have known him only since last fall and the Kerry-wars, M-1717A1, 2nd Sis and I became and remained friends. Friend - a word I do not use lightly.
But now M1917A1 has finished this tour of duty and DEROSed to a better world, where there are no illegal immigrants, terrorists, veteran-imposters, tax-gougers, or lying and sniveling political hacks. Where evey shot group is tight and the firearm never needs cleaning. Where the "O"Club, the NCO Club and the EM Club are all the same club. I'm still going to share that beer with you one day, but M1917A1, old friend, since you got there first, You're going to buy the first round.
Time not to mourn M1817A1's rotation home, but to try to celebrate the fact he did a tour in our AO, and we got to know him.

Those of you not in personal contact with 2ndSis might want to send her a PM.

SEE YOU ON THE OTHER SIDE BROTHER.

http://www.uss-rangerguy.com/Ranger_Sounds/2_taps.wav

Day is done,
gone the sun,
From the hills,
from the lake,
From the skies.
All is well,
safely rest,
God is nigh.

Go to sleep,
peaceful sleep,
May the soldier
or sailor,
God keep.
On the land
or the deep,
Safe in sleep.

Love, good night,
Must thou go,
When the day,
And the night
Need thee so?
All is well.
Speedeth all
To their rest.

Fades the light;
And afar
Goeth day,
And the stars
Shineth bright,
Fare thee well;
Day has gone,
Night is on.

Thanks and praise,
For our days,
'Neath the sun,
Neath the stars,
'Neath the sky,
As we go,
This we know,
God is nigh.

I'm always saddened to hear of another Veteran passing away. My condolences to the family, especially to you, 2nd Amendment Sis. You are all in my and my wife's thoughts and prayers.

Quote:
In another time, another place..
I looked into a strangers face..
with eyes so dark, they pierced the soul..
demanding total self control..

He stood there, with his silent ways..
was thinking, he's seen better days..
outside the VA's local center..
shivering from the cold of winter..

He asked for nothing, stopped and stared..
feeling as if no one cared.
Who is this man? well, it could be..
the brave one, who defended me..

How did it ever get this way?
He's paid a price, we can't repay..
But what they get now in return..
a lesson, very hard to learn..

In Vietnam, there was a war..
that never could we know the score..
and there, so many lives were lost..
politically unjust...the cost..

I looked again, and bowed my head..
and know just what I should have said..
Thank you..for this thing you've done..
even though, nobody won..

Eulogy for a Veteran

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.

I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the Gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the mornings hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush

of quiet birds in circled flight,
I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die.

M1917A1 and 2ndAmendSis,

You both became an inspiration and close friend to me. Even though we have only known each other since our finding each other on this forum, I feel as though we have been friends for ages. I will miss Gary (M1917A1) immensely. Gary was a person who would help anyone and give them the shirt off his back if need be. I will sincerely miss him and he will always be fondly remembered. Smile

I would ask, why is he a number and not a name? He should be honored by name and not his log on.

I didn't have permission to use his name and so I didn't.

But, using someone's nickname is not at all disrespectful in intent - it's a nickname he chose. (I think it's an MOS?)
