Was at the convenience store tonight getting two diet cokes which I definitely do not need, but noticed next to me a young man with pants hung low, piercing throughout and a black rubber band on his wrist with the word Respect. This brought back into memory an incident which occurred years ago on a job involving two employees. The workers came to me and explained how they were not being given respect and demanded it or else. Well they were given the option to climb down the ladder or be thrown off the roof. Upon explaining to my father the latest turnover and the need for more workers he stated people should be given respect at which I replied people should be given decency and common courtesy, but respect will always be earned and especially so in a dangerous work environment.

Then when I got home and opened up the Drudge Report low and behold a surprisingly good article touching on this very subject by none other than Joan Collins. In her article ‘Britain Destroying Itself from Within’, she writes,

Quote:
"We've become the 'Whatcha lookin' at?' culture. Why do young people consider it cool to be arrogant, swaggering and rude? Why do so many people in England seem so cynical and self-centred?”

Well Joan one of the reasons is the Aretha Franklins 67’ hit R-E-S-P-E-C-T, a harbinger of 60’s culture and the new age thought respect should always be given as opposed to earned.

She continues,

Quote:
"Traditional virtues of male chivalry and female propriety were very far from view. After all, a lack of manners and politeness in a society can only be a reflection of what the society thinks of itself. It's frightful how being told that you are no good makes you hate yourself, and hate others. And it's frightful how quickly a whole country of self-loathers can be bred.”

Unfortunately, we as a society have lost common values such as courtesy and decency. Respect, being something which you earn throughout life is becoming a principle foreign to most. Read the entire article for it is very good and shows Joan can write insightful pieces as well as the fluff. The British Tory Edmund Burke couldn’t have written it better and I wonder if Joan realizes she just wrote a conservative article.

One minor correction, if incorrect please inform me. She starts the article by stating,

Quote:
"A great civilization is not conquered from without until it has destroyed itself from within, said the American historian Will Durrant about ancient Rome. This self-destruction of values is exactly what is happening in England today.”

Edit: I believe Will Durant got this from Augustine who wrote ‘City of God’.

I am not familiar with Joan Collins other than her work as a fluff writer, yet a well written piece about the dangers we as well as Britain face as societies should be regarded as such.

Her message is sound and should be heard is all.
