Just when you thought the USSC story was fraught with profound overtones and complexity, another wrinkle gets tossed into the waters...

3. Washington Scuttlebutt: Scalia May Step Down

One of the hottest rumors making the rounds in Washington has it that the Supreme Court may be in for more changes than anyone had previously imagined.

According to Paul Bedard, who writes the Washington Whispers column for U.S. News & World Report, word is circulating that if William H. Rehnquist steps down from his post on the court, John Roberts will get his chief justice job.

That story is not completely new. NewsMax's Insider Report detailed weeks ago that Roberts was really Bush's choice to replace Rehnquist, and that the wily Rehnquist decided to not retire before O'Connor. This way, the thinking goes, Bush is forced to name a conservative jurist to replace O'Connor.

But Bedard had a new twist to that story. He said on television this week that Justice Antonin Scalia may retire if he's passed over for the chief justice position.

Scalia's retirement would be a blow to the conservative wing of the court, but open up a third opportunity for Bush to remake the court with younger conservative jurists.
