When C-Span re-aired the 1971 O`Neill vs. Kerry debate on The Dick Cavett Show a few weeks back there was absolutely no doubt Mr. O`Neill was the clear winner. When John O. challenged John K. to produce the affidavits relating to war crimes he accused others of committing Kerry had no answer. When O`Neill challenged the future Senator to other debates at venues where invitations had been extended ( 60 Minutes, NBC, etc. ) Kerry declined. It was clear that Kerry wanted only locations where he could pack the audience. Yet, amazingly, here is what Brinkley wrote in his book," With his message well-honed, and a gift not to freeze when the light went red, Kerry triumphed over O`Neill." Truly, Brinkley is the master of hyperbole.

There are scores of examples of this trite in his book Tour of Duty but bear with me a little longer to see if the techniques he uses is familiar with what he is saying about Swift Boat Veterans for the Truth on CNN and Fox. In a 1971 Kerry press conference four P.O.W. wives show up to protest the outrageous charges he has made against his former comrades. Brinkley does not give any of their names or quotes but sees a chance to discredit the P.O.W. wives, bash Nixon, and praise Kerry from one quote from a lady he finds and identifies. Here is her quote, " I think it`s a shame that Mr. Kerry is being maligned by a group used by Mr. Nixon and won`t acknowledge it."

The left-dominated elitist media has taken upon itself the mission of not just reporting the news, but of interpreting the news for the ignorant masses. They don't do this only in books. They do it "live."

Did you know that Gold Star Mothers protested with Kerry in 1971? True. They even led a procession to Arlington.
