Two Palestinian mothers, Maryam and Salima, are sitting in a café in Nablus chatting over a pint of goat's milk. Maryam, the older of the two, pulls her bag out and starts flipping through pictures and they start reminiscing.
“This is my oldest son Mohammed. We took this on his 24th birthday a few months ago.”
“Yes, I remember him as a baby,” says Salima cheerfully.
“He's a martyr now though,” Maryam confides.
“Oh, let us hope that Sura An Naba is true,” responds Salima, “where it says in verse 33 that he shall enjoy the delights of full-breasted women – waqa wa ayba – in paradise.”
“You know your Koran,” Maryam says admiringly. She pulls out another picture. “And this is my second son Khaled. He was 21 when we took this last year.”
“Oh, I remember him,” says Salima happily. “He had such curly hair when he was born.”
“He's now a martyr too,” says Maryam quietly.
“Ah, let us hope he is having is way in heaven with all the ‘young boys of perpetual freshness, as beautiful as virgin pearls,’ as our sacred Koran promises the righteous in Sura Al Insan verse 19.”
Maryam nods her head approvingly. “And this is my third son. My baby. My beautiful Ahmed. He's 18,” she whispers.
“Yes,” says Salima enthusiastically, “I remember when he first started school.”
“But he wanted to follow in his brother’s sacred footsteps – so he's a martyr also,” says Maryam with tears in her eyes.
With a pause and a deep sigh, Salima holds Maryam’s hand. She looks wistfully at the photographs and says...
“They blow up so fast today, don't they?” |
