INGLESIDE - The HSV 2 Swift is living up to its name in delivering supplies to Hurricane Katrina victims.
The converted car ferry, loaded with 85 pallets of water, hygiene kits and food while docked at Naval Station Ingleside, took about 18 hours to reach the USS Bataan just off the Louisiana coast. That is at least 50 percent quicker than a conventional ship, HSV 2 Swift Captain Mark Sakaguchi said. The crew expects to return to the region again late today.
"The crew is very excited about the mission while they're also remorseful for the victims," Sakaguchi said. "The sense is that we're helping our own."
Of the water going to support relief efforts, 9,000 gallons was purchased by the Navy with the remainder provided by donations from Wal-Mart, H-E-B and the surrounding community, Naval Station Ingleside media spokeswoman Fifi Kieschnick said.
The HSV 2 Swift also will carry maintenance gear and helicopter personnel from Naval Air Station Corpus Christi to relieve helicopter crews, including two pilots, five air crewmen and 10 maintenance workers, HM-15 Senior Chief Tony Pineda said.
"We're working as hard as we can to get it out quickly," Pineda said. "The biggest challenge is to stay flexible and be where we need to be." |
