I have read that the ACOE has flatly stated for years that the levees would hold at best only in a Cat 3 Hurricane. Media outlets ranging from the Times-Picayune to the National Geographic had published articles describing what a levee break would mean in death and property destruction for NOLA for years. Hurricane Katrina grew several days before landfall and still well out into the Gulf into a Cat 5 monster...why did Mayor Nagin and Governor Blanco not have already in place a mandatory evacuation plan for NOLA using school buses, city buses, etc.? I guess it was Les Bon Temp Roulle! Let the Good Times Roll and when all he** breaks loose blame Bush! |

VetsDaughter,
In my opinion, that head in sand approach to planning has been the standing orders from the LA Governor/Mayor's office for generations...Con the Whitehouse might be another way to put it...I would venture a guess that in addition to the highest rate of violent crimes, New Orleans has one of the highest rates of Federal public assistance (welfare) rolls of all US Cities...the Gov/Mayor just joined...and will continue to bite the hand that feeds it....Sad.

The mayor of New Orleans and the Governor of Louisianna are two of the poorest leaders our country has ever witnessed. The people of Louisianna voted for them so they have to live with the vote. It is a good example of why we should always vote for people who exhibit great character.
President Clinton or Al Gore as president during 9/11 would have resulted in similar leadership in my opinion. _________________ "An activist is the person who cleans up the water, not the one claiming its dirty."

Jack,
Lincoln may have been a Republican, but he was also a staunch Liberal. Sometime between the Civil War and Now, the Conservatives switched from have mostly Democrats in their ranks to having mostly Republicans in their ranks. Likewise, the Liberals changed from being made up of most Replublicans to being made up of mostly Democrats. If Lincoln were alive today, he'd be more like John McCain, a Liberal Republican. Be careful what you wish for; it might not be what you want.

Actually Lincoln would be a hard core neo-con today. Take anyone from the 18th century or early nineteenth century and they would be absolutley horrified by what the democratic party has become. They would call for the execution of probably 90 percent of the congress and senate members. The thing is everyone was liberal back then by todays standards. They were trying to create a country in a new and unique manner which was never tried before and noone could know what would become of it. One common thread among everyone (democrats, federalists and republicans) was they were god fearing people and believed Judeo-Christian philosophy was absolutely necessary for any chance of our country surviving the new and never attempted representitive republic.
I do agree though with you Buffalo that the Republicans have more in common with early 20th century democrats then they do the republicans from that era. The democratic party is the party of status quo unless it means more social programs and anything which moves the state closer to socialism and their ultimate dream or shall we say deluded fantasy of communism. _________________ "An activist is the person who cleans up the water, not the one claiming its dirty."
