Thank you, America.
You know, America, your Marines are doing great out here.
That’s right, America. Honor, courage, and commitment right here smack
in the middle of Iraq. They say it’s time to come home, but you know we
have to do what we have to do, and we can — because of great supporters
like you.
We continue to kick butt in central and western Iraq and keep insurgents
on their toes to prepare for the upcoming elections in October. Lately, we
have conducted numerous operations throughout the area and continue
to spoil and capture the enemy right in their own safe havens.
That’s right, America; there isn’t anywhere safe for them to run. Nowhere!
Fighting here continues every day with attacks by IEDs, ambushes, or
indirect fire.
What is all this about? People. Us helping Iraqis and you all helping us.
We have been very busy throughout the region and your Marines are
staying tough.
Every time your Marines receive packages and letters from you, they
know that America is behind them and your effort is reassuring.
You can ensure that you get a response from your service
members by placing a note or an AnySoldier postcard in your
box that you send, with your address or email address on it so
it can be returned to you quickly. This way you offer your
service members a chance to write you back.
I had a friend go through Germany as he had a medical
condition. While there, he met and visited with many wounded
service members from the burn and amputee sections. He felt
pretty bad, as his injury was serious. After seeing the warriors
there, he knew he wasn’t as bad off as he’d thought, especially
after he talked with them and they all had a positive attitude.
Know that all service members receive the very best medical
treatment when wounded in combat. I had the honor of meeting
a fine Marine today who was wounded in the Battle of Fallujah
and lost his leg. Without giving in and being deterred, he
continued the fight and never gave up. His desire to be in the
Marines drove him to increase his physical ability, and he is
now redeployed to Iraq and maintains a full-time position
as a U.S. Marine.
It is Marines like these that make my 13 years in the Marine Corps
and multiple combat tours humble by comparison. I am proud to
serve with all of them.
Semper Fidelis and God bless America.
Capt. Gary Bourland is an infantry Marine in the 2nd Marine
