Off subject, but just a warning to those of you that are considering purchasing an LCD tv for Christmas. I purchased a Magnavox that lasted 12 months. It is just a small one and I paid $379.00 for it new. Took it to an authorized magnavox service center that charged me 20 dollars to tell me that parts are not available for this unit and it cannot be repaired. Contacted Magnavox and the only way this set can be repaired is through and exchange for a re-conditioned unit for $310.00. Just a warning to let you know that you may want to spend your hard earned dollars on another brand.

This seems like a pattern. I purchased a Magnavox color TV about 15 or 16 years ago. It lasted 13 months and burst into flames. I got a opportunity to use a home fire extinguisher for the first time. When I took it to the repair center, Magnavox gave me an attitude, a hard time and a lot of lip that it was probably something I did. They also said that even if there had been an active warranty the fire extinguisher chemicals had voided it. They noted to me that the warranty was a month past expired so it was out of their hands. A few weeks later they sent me a bill for $30 to cover their expenses for examining the charred TV. I didn't pay it and argued with them for over a year.

I have never purchased anything from them or their affiliates since.

What other brand labels are on this piece of s**t?

Many of the units on the market are all made by the same plant(s) somewhere in China or another 3rd world haven of technological sewage. Does any TV set assembly or manufacturing go on in the US anymore? I don't think so.

On another Note. Don't buy a Lexmark printer. You can get a "great deal" up front cheap, but then you find replacing the ink cartridges costs more that the initial purchase.

Addendum: If I am not mistaken, Phillips is owned by a French conglomerate. The French do not manufacture anything, much less anything that works. They are heavily invested in American Cos. and where possible shift the mnaufacture to the cheapest market source. Strike another blow for French management expertise if this is still the case.

Made in Poland. Poles are putting out good stuff these days and kicking butt on socialist Germany and France. In France have the fear of "The Polish Plumber". He comes in, does a better job and cheaper than the French guy and then goes home.

I got a Panasonic DVD recorder about 2 years ago. After six months,
it ate the hard drive. I took it back to Circuit City and they sent it
in to Panasonic. It was back in good working order within 10 working
days. I also got instructions on blowing the disc drive out with air and
using the cleaning disc on the laser lens. Since then, as long as I keep
it clean, I have had no problems.

I like to toot the horn when things work too.

My local repair shop has a lot of brands of tv's in for repair at all times.
The shop is loaded up with RCA big screen rear projection 16 x 9 ratio tv's.
I mean the last visit over there, I saw one Panasonic, two Mitsubishu's and about 10 RCAs.
I'm just talking about the big screen tv's here.
Don't know what that means, I'll let everyone draw their own conclusions.

For me it means no more RCAs for me.
Got a 52" RCA rear projection one sitting in my living room now staring at us with a blank screen. Comes on for a second, goes off.
If I let it sit for a week or load it up in my truck and take it for a ride, it will usually play ok for a few days again. Been doing this routine for months now. We think it's either possessed or it likes to go sightseeing.
I do have to admit it played fine for about 6 yrs.

I bought a Sony VAIO notebook a few years back and after a few months it quit working. Seeking service for the unit I was told my only alternative was to send the unit to San Diego, CA from the Philippines. When I called the San Diego Service Center I was told it cost an average of $600 to repair plus the return shipping.

That was the last Sony product I purchased.

My replacement Compaq notebook has been a faithful companion and served me well since my Sony nightmare.

Good news, after emailing Sam's Club and letting them know about the problem with Magnavox I got a call last night and they told me they will take it back - no problem. I even told them i didn't expect them too, just wanted them to know about the policy, but they told me they would be happy to do it.

get your stuff at best buy and get the extended warranty (about 40.00)
then break it yourself and bring it back before the two years are up.
stick it right back to them.

I had a similar problem with Sears and their Kenmore brand. I purchased a microwave/coffe maker combo which I love. The cheap glass caraff broke and to replace it would cost me 80.00 plus shipping. The entire unit cost 120.00 on sale. So I wrapped it up in bubble wrap and exchanged the entire microwave unit saying it was broken. It was still under warrenty, luckily. I'll never purchase another appliance from Sears.

The War Department was unhappy last night. It seems that her GE
27" CRT TV was on the fritz again. It's gone about 5 years now. After
three years, one of the grandkids ran full tilt into it and it came up with
a dark screen and flickered. #1 SinL who is an electronics tech told
her to smack it again and see what happens. It jumped back into
working order and operated for another two years. So what made her
really unhappy was that her hand was sore from smacking it for the
last three days.

So I went to Wally World and there was a 27" flat screen CRT on sale
for under $200. A Sanyo. OK, there was a 20" LCD for $450, but I'm
not ready for that just yet. Prices just gotta drop sometime. 'Sides,
just how much clarity do you need for "Oprah" and "My Name is Earl"
anyhow? she's delighted. "The faces aren't all red anymore!" So I
keep the reciept for a year or so anyhow. Wally World is good at
taking stuff back if it doesn't work.
