Emphasis mine: This is horrid. Unbelievable. I would like to know who the other two republicans are beside Craig that voted against the Patriot Act. I would give up many a liberties to know that we are all safe in the US. These folks are brain dead and or living in a seudo reality. They need to wake up soon before our streets look like Bagdhad!

WASHINGTON - The Senate on Friday rejected attempts to reauthorize several provisions of the USA Patriot Act as infringing too much on Americans' privacy and liberty, dealing a huge defeat to the Bush administration and Republican leaders.
In a crucial vote early Friday, the bill's Senate supporters were not able to get the 60 votes needed to overcome a threatened filibuster by Sens. Russ Feingold, D-Wis., and Larry Craig, R-Idaho, and their allies. The final vote was 52-47.
President Bush, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and Republicans congressional leaders had lobbied fiercely to make most of the expiring Patriot Act provisions permanent, and add new safeguards and expiration dates to the two most controversial parts: roving wiretaps and secret warrants for books, records and other items from businesses, hospitals and organizations such as libraries.
Feingold, Craig and other critics said that wasn't enough, and have called for the law to be extended in its present form so they can continue to try and add more civil liberties safeguards. But Bush, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist and House Speaker Dennis Hastert have said they won't accept a short-term extension of the law.
If a compromise is not reached, the 16 Patriot Act provisions expire on Dec. 31.
Frist changed his vote at the last moment after seeing the critics would win. He decided to vote with the prevailing side so he could call for a new vote at any time. He immediately objected to an offer of a short term extension from Democrats, saying the House won't approve it and the president won't sign it.
"We have more to fear from terrorism than we do from this Patriot Act," Frist warned.
If the Patriot Act provisions expire, Republicans say they will place the blame on Democrats in next year's midterm elections. "In the war on terror, we cannot afford to be without these vital tools for a single moment," White House press secretary Scott McClellan said. "The time for Democrats to stop standing in the way has come."
But the Patriot Act's critics got a boost from a New York Times report saying Bush authorized the National Security Agency to monitor the international phone calls and international e-mails of hundreds — perhaps thousands — of people inside the United States. Previously, the NSA typically limited its domestic surveillance to foreign embassies and missions and obtained court orders for such investigations.
"I don't want to hear again from the attorney general or anyone on this floor that this government has shown it can be trusted to use the power we give it with restraint and care," said Feingold, the only senator to vote against the Patriot Act in 2001.
"It is time to have some checks and balances in this country," shouted Sen. Patrick Leahy (news, bio, voting record), ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Committee. "We are more American for doing that." |

The Democrats and a few Liberal RINO saps have just derailed domestic counter-terrorism. Get ready for another hit. The public safety be damned by these fools.
The Gorelick wall is back in place. Terrorists rights have been affirmed and our counter-terrorist personnel are in handcuffs again. ACLU is the only ones who will benefit.
I have lost any repect for most of the Senate. No leadership. Most of the self centered buffoons are too focused on running for POTUS and have no focus on the best interest of the country.

There hasn't been one lawsuit filed by anyone saying their rights have been compromised by the Patriot Act that I am aware of.
So what the hell is the problem?
Only thing that jumps out at me is politics by some who put their personal gain ahead of the safety of the country.
Just like GM just said.
Boy some of these people need to be fired next election.

What happened to representing the people. Everyone I know and have spoken with want the Patriot Act. Furthermore, watching Mike and Juliet today on Fox at 1 pm EST asked the audience and they were outraged. Not one felt it was a violation of their rights and wanted the Patriot Act as a measure of protection.
The Senate does not represent the wishes of the people that elected them and I am sick of it!

ABC radio stated that the NYT article was being waved about in the Senate chamber today as the vote on extension of the Patriot Act was being debated. Several senators said that the article influenced them to change their vote. 
Are we losing our country?

What new lows will these so called tabloidlike news papers go to? The NYT is a dispicable publication. To think that is all it will take is a news paper article to influence such an important decision just proves my point. These Senators do not think for themselves! What is next? Will the media run the senate and our country? Looks like this is more than the begining. Seems it has happened one too many times. Just sickening!

The Dissociated Press reports these remarks by Russ Feingold commenting on the NYT story on the Senate floor:

This was not a voting down of the Act. It was a vote on cloture to vote on it and it lost 52-47. That is, a filibuster led by Russ Feingold (of McCain-Feingold, that is John McCain). Frist switched to a nay vote to enable it to be brought up again (by him) in a parlimentary manuver. In looking at the nays, one was Joe Lieberman. I am disappointed, the Libs must have something on him. The saps are Sununnu, Hagel (Potus wannabe surprise, surprise and no way) Murkowski, and Craig. Dems Tim Johnson and Ben Nelson voted Yea.
It could be brought up again (I doubt it), but if not before adjournment, it expires. Stupid, stupid Liberals. (__!__)s

Texas maintained its right to secede from the Union. I do believe the time has come.
Otherwise, brothers and sisters, don't depend on the Federal government for anything. As long as there are democrats our nation will be destined for destruction. If you do not own a gun you should get one, or several. Be ready to protect yourselves and your famiies and pray that the terrorists will start at the homes of Ted Kennedy, Charles Shumer, Harry Reid, Russ Feingold, John McCain, Al Gore, Nancy Pelosi and the scores of latter day traitors.

That is what they are probably figuring, but look at Spain, then France....lol...stupid morons. They will end up like the rest. The terrorists have no sense of loyalty.....sorta like our Senate. The heck with those that vote us in, now that we are in, we will do what we want.
