I sincerely hope some of you caught the stellar panel of Presidential Advisors on Cspan last nite...
In spite of Brian Williams thinly veiled 'Iraq is another Vietnam' 'moderating', the advisors came across as the 'real men' they are....
3/11/06 Panel moderated by Brian Williams
Ted Sorenson - advisor to Kennedy
Jack Valenti - advisor to JOhnson
Henry Kissinger - advisor to Nixon
Alexander Haig - advisor
Jack Valenti and Haig had been in the military....
Kissinger, an immigrant had lived under a dictatorship, and believed that the America he knew must prevail at all costs. Kissinger is the greatest living American Statesman. It was good to hear him restate what a great international Statesman Nixon was...and that he, Kissinger, had no regrets.
Jack Valenti was a pilot in WWII, flew 50 some missions. He reminded all what a great decision Truman made to avoid invading Japan...the altenative was the Atom Bomb...Valenti would have been a pilot flying B-25s in to Japan if the Bomb had not been dropped....probably would have been killed along with the other hundreds of thousands of Americans who would have died fighting an extended invasion of Japan.
Jack Valenti ended the show, recounting a return trip to Omaha Beach with his 14 year old son. While there they visited the American Soldiers graves. Then, Jack told his son to read each of them...name, rank, age, date of death. Each one of them gave the most precious gift to his son...freedom from tyranny, so his son could live, with a little luck, a long peaceful lifetime.
the link at CSpan didn't work for me...perhaps you'll have better luck...
