What happened is, the people found out they could vote themselves money out of the public coffers and the politicians accommodated them by filling those coffers with tax dollars. It's a redistribution of wealth brought about by democracy. Ironic, eh?

I just had to pay a fee for a city permit (tax) for a plumber to replace the water heater in my home. Portland wants to levy a tax on anyone using a cell phone within their city.

In my opinion, fines for speeding tickets are just enormous taxes levied on citizens through arbitrarily set low speed limits. Currently, Oregon school speed limits are set at 20 mph 24 hours a day unless otherwise marked. Oregon is also one of two states where you can get a ticket for running a yellow light.

These are just hidden taxes.

and business license TAX - we have that here in AZ;

state and most cities (I can't vouch for all of the cities - but most have it).

and motel / hotels here have some kind of 'parking' tax.....
