From Powerline today:
Quote: | Purple Haze at the Times
From the corrections section of yesterday's New York Times:
Quote: | An article and a picture caption yesterday about the funeral of Sgt. Jose Gomez of Queens, who was killed on April 20 in Iraq, referred incorrectly to the Army representative who comforted his mother. She was a sergeant first class — an enlisted woman, not an officer. The article also misstated the name of a service medal that a general presented to Sergeant Gomez's mother. It is a Purple Heart, not a Purple Star. |
This is freaking unbelievable. "Purple Star"? We have never pretended to any expertise in military matters, but I wouldn't have thought there was a single adult American who didn't know that the medal that is awarded to wounded servicemen is the Purple Heart. Now we know there are at least two: the reporter who wrote that story, and the editor who--presumably--read it before it was published. Keep that in mind next time you're wondering whether to trust the Times' coverage of military affairs. |

They're from the press. Of course they're clueless. _________________ Swift Boats - Qui Nhon (12/69-4/70), Cat Lo (4/70-5/70), Vung Tau (5/70-12/71) |

Serious subject and serious question: what has happened? It seems to me that reporters of all stripes are getting dumber and dumber every day.
Yeah, I know the talking heads get qualified by their looks and elocution; no brains or knowledge required. But what about everyone else? It seems that any topic that has the least bit of technicality or depth to it leaves the reporter completely clueless, so they have to run to an expert (often selected based on their political persuasion) to even have a clue as to what the news is supposed to mean.
Has it always been this bad (and I'm just getting smarter), or is reporting simply becoming nothing more than repeating what someone writes and provides to them? (It's not just the NYT; I see the same thing on Fox all the time, and my local newspaper is full of good examples.) |
